About Time!

George@Colonel's Workshop-Havertown PA

>Good Evening Friends,

To celebrate their 5th anniversary, my #2 son Ed asked me to make a Regulator style wall clock as a surprise gift for his bride, Susan. Ed decided to buy plans from Murray Clocks of Ontario, and I fashioned this Royal Windsor for Susan. He was able to give it to her at the family's polyanna Christmas party. We acquired this face and all the other associated works and hardware from Murray. They are GREAT people to deal with, and I highly recommend them.

George@Colonel's Workshop-Havertown PA

>Good Evening Friends,

The entire clock is made from QSWO which I have had stashed away for years waiting for something special. Ed wanted the clock to be the same color as our dining room furniture. Accordingly, I used a cherry gel stain from ZAR, sealed it with Seal Coat, and applied several coats of satin poly, rubbed out and paste waxed. I omitted glass panels in the sides, preferring the QSWO. It also gives the chimes a righer tone. The movement is from Hermle, and it chimes on the hour and half hour. My #3 son Ken gained the hinges and made the doors fit properly. The lyre pendulum was my idea of a surprise polyanna gift to them both, but the movement Ed ordered took a shorter pendulum. Murray swapped movements for me with no problem. It was a fun project for a very lovely and deserving lady.

>Hi George,

That is a very handsome clock, the workmanship looks top shelf as ussual. I really enjoy the stories that go with your works as well, always centered on what matters in your life.

I have used Murray Clocks a few times and I have always been happy as well, hey, they are Canadian!

Take care,

Jim

>George,

Very, very nice. What a wonderful Xmas gift. I've built one shaker-style pendulum clock (also as a Xmas gift) and would like to build another; they are fun to do! Nice use of the QSWO and selection on an appropriate finish. Thanks for posting.

>Greetings from George's "#2 son" Ed. 'T'is my wife, Susan, for whom the clock bells toll these days. We are in love with the clock and will be in my branch of the Dart family tree for generations to come. My 22-month-old daughter is already asking me if she's in the will and if we've left her the clock.

I've read all of your posts as of 4:10 p.m. ET today. I can attest that George's kids DO have the best hand-me-downs and that his family is the most important thing to him. His raw talent amazes all of us, and we ourselves have had our "discussions" on who'll be getting what...eventually :-p

Excellent, Colonel!

Robert Hutchins

>Quite up to your usual high standard. Well Done ! ! !

Took a look at the Hermle site and saw their electric fail-safe video. Did you and #2 go that route or get the wind-up mechanism without it?

Oh, don't you have those hands on wrong? You have the hands reversed. It's gonna make the hours fly but the minutes will be a real drag. You really MUST pay more attention to details, George!

[It was the custom for at least a century for timepiece purveyors to display their goods with the time set at approximately 8:20, the time of Lincoln's death. Your pic has the hands in opposite positions.]

Hey Bob

George@Colonel's Workshop-Havertown PA

>I think there is merit in standardizing clock time for display purposes, at least on the face of it. It would come in handy. The Hermle movement we installed this winter is strictly spring driven, but we could always fall back on an electrical devise. Summer readily available, and certainly less expensive. Thanks for those kind words.

>That is a great looking timepiece. I have always wanted to build a Grandfather clock with the mechanical works. The chimes and movement cost several hundred for a good one however. After looking at yours, I may work on some smaller clocks when I get my current projects done. The projects have been stalled since the darn surgery kicked my butt. Still haven't done much in the shop. Did help the youngest son fix his van yesterday - Alternator replacement - in the shop. Today he came down and we replaced a wheel cylinder on my van. Didn't build the shop for cars but beats working out in the cold.
