Traffic congestion

I forsee another server move in the near future. Meanwhile, I hope you will continue to report any slowdowns.

Every once in a while I will look at my server logs and was surprised to see that over 1/4 of the visits were by people who had image loading turned off in their browsers... this seemed like a very high number and was talking to another webmaster about it and he said that those were most likely robot crawlers looking for email addresses, backdoors, etc. etc.

I really hate sites that use animation, especially macromedia's product. If you don't have it loaded on your PC, the program hunts for it for up to 5 minutes and then keeps asking if you want to download it. I've tried to spoof it (macromedia), to no avail. So I have to wait through the silly ads to get to the stuff I want.
I'm not going to pay 5 times as much for my connection to the cable company and ATT does not provide DSL in my area. So I'll stay pictures-off for the foreseeable future.

Kill Macromedia!

>Dave,
I'm on DSL, but I still hate Macromedia! Here is a way to get rid of it for good (it can be reversed should you ever want to):
Open your "host" file in the "C:\WINNT\system32\drivers\etc\" directory - use a text editor like notepad - then add these lines to it:
127.0.0.0 macromedia.com
127.0.0.0 www.macromedia.com
127.0.0.0 active.macromedia.com
127.0.0.0 download.macromedia.com
127.0.0.0 fpdownload.macromedia.com
That will keep Macromedia from finding it's home and downloading. To get rid of what is already installed on your computer, delete everything in the "C:\WINNT\system32\Macromed\" directory.

HA, that's what virus writers do.....

Hmmmmm, where did YOU learn that ;) ;)

>That trick is as old as the internet.
You can even make shortcuts like:
209.92.19.38 .w # woodcentral.com
Then just type ".w" in the address bar of your browser and it will take you to 209.92.19.38 which is WoodCentral! This shortcut works as long as the IP address doesn't change (they usually don't).
FWIW I keep my host file set as read-only and hidden to prevent viruses from getting to it.

>My problem is that I want to spoof having macromedia loaded. If I don't have it loaded, their adware hunts for it for a good long time before the "want to download" message pops up. This hunting takes longer than allowing the ad to load and run. Ideally, I'd like to bypass the whole thing, like turning pictures off in IE. Or is that what your code accomplishes?
