Design Question

>I'm building a 9' wide entertainment center - base cabinets on bottom, two 24" wide side units at the sides, which leaves a center space 60" wide to mount a flat screen TV. The side cabinets are 18" deep. My question is how deep to setr the back panel for the TV. I think setting it back the full 18" my be too far or proper viewing. What would you recommend. I am not going to be using a catilevered TV mount, just a flat mount. Thanks for your thoughts.

>If you mount the flat panel on the back the overhang of the cabinet will help cut down unwanted glare and reflections to some degree. However, it may also limit the viewable area if there are seat locations off to the side. You will also have a variety of cables to run to and from various devices so be sure to leave space behind the screen for cable runs to be hidden.

>Did you mean flat panel or flat screen as you indicated in your message. If it is the former I'd rethink the whole idea of standard 24" or 18 " cabinets.

IMHO 24" is an outdated measurement for todays entertainment equipment. Electronic equipment is only getting more compact and the need for large cabinets to house big audio or video equipment is a thing of the past. I'd consider cabinets that are 18" or less in depth, at the base. and 15" or less on the uppers.

Mock it up

>You can speculate all you want about questions like this, but until you create a mockup, you can't fully integrate all the variables. If you can't get the TV to make a mockup, consider leaving the back panel unattached until installation day, then mount the TV on it and play with the depth until your customer is happiest. Then anchor the panel.

This may require a rethink of how this unit assembles, but I like the idea of a modular back panel to accommodate future revisions as well.

>Thanks for the thoughts, I will cut the panel to fit the opening but leave it unattached to see what depth works and then secure it.
