OT-Earbuds for iPod?

Tony Sade (Charleston, WV)

>I'm going to replace the earbuds that came with my video iPod and would like to hear some recommendations for sets that go for under $100. As much as I don't like the sensation of having the equivalent of someone's fingers stuck into my ears, I'm going to stick with the bud type rather than over-the-ear phones for the sake of compactness, portability, etc. Also, I can fit the buds under my hearing protectors for use out in the shop. The choices out there are a bit dizzying and it would be nice to hear some recommendations based on personal experience.

Thanks,

Tony

I like the in the ear buds. i would preferred the Sure ec3 but the sure EC 1 can be had for under a 100 and you can get them at best buy etc.

I found the ec-3 to be very good at canceling out ambient noise very well but they are about 179.

the ec1 with the foam sleeves do well on airplane but the volume hsa to be turned up a little louder than normal.

that is what causes ear damage. turning up the ear bud to cancel out noise. they are not designed for that. but the in the era canceling headphone are actually safer. the EC-2 only needed th most minimal volume level. it sounds louder but you are actually using less noise.

for a 100 I am not sure the ec1 are that much better than a 40 dollar pair of in the ear buds. try them out if you can.

>I've been using a pair of Sony MDR-EX71SL "Fontopia" ear buds with my iPod. Compared to the stock iPod ear buds, the Sonys are more comfortable and less likely to fall out of my ear. Sound quality is very good, but it's been so long since I've used the stock headphones that I don't remember what they sound like. I seem to recall that the Sonys sound a bit better, but there's probably not a huge difference. The only slight annoyance is that the cords leading to each ear bud aren't the same length. I guess this helps you remember to put the right bud in each ear, but it's always seemed a bit strange to me...

Not sure if the exact model I have is still available, but all of the ear buds in the "Fontopia" line are similar. I think I paid around $30 through Amazon. FYI, for the latest and greatest earbud headphones, shipped direct from Japan, you can try audiocubes.com. I bought my first pair of Sony Fontopia ear buds from them without any problems.

>The creative ep-630 gets really strong reviews and is only $30. I like them myself and don't feel bad destroying them in the shop from time to time.

One small caveat; the noise protection from some of the over the ear styled muffs can be pretty significant and be nearly just as effective as buying the new peltors with the line in option. I have a pair of sony mdr v6 keep out quite a bit of sound and also sound very nice. I have worn in the shop a couple of times and they worked well, they were just a little hot during the summer.

I've got some J-Lab's from Amazon...

>About $25 with shipping, quick drop ship. They're the kind with silicone rubber cones instead of foam to kind of cut off outside sound. The cones come in three sizes for various ear morphologies. I've seen similar ones at Target, I think they were Sony's (probably all coming from one Chinese factory, just like some power tools do).

They're a bit more comfortable for me than the foam ones, which tend to make my ears hurt after a while if I don't get them in just so.
