OT: Whirlpool Duet 9300 Vibration in Spin Cycle

Paul Leuba

>After reading several threads a while back on this site with positive comments on the Whirpool Duet series front loading washer, I encouraged my son to purchase one when his old washer broke a couple weeks ago.

He got a good deal on a Whirpool Duet 9300 at Lowe's and it was installed on Wednesday. After using it for a couple loads, he reports that it seems to be vibrating or shaking a bit more than he expects during the spin cycle. The machine is not jumping around, just vibrating in place.

He has not previously owned a front loader and would like to know if this vibration is normal for this machine.

>for the cost of those things, they should come with a 24 hour tech support!

I have a much cheaper top load GE and it came with a sheet describing the noises during each cycle. maybe he has one of these?

I thought that was interesting because it does make odd noises( some wave something or another)

also check to make sure the unit is level.

good luck

>Does he have them mounted on the pedistals or bases they are selling with them now? Are they on the first or second floor? I have heard that the pedistals are not recommended on the second floor.

>We have the Siemans front loader and it is the nature of the beast that then do vibrate more than a top loader during spin. Ours only does this during the high speed spin cycle. As was said before, leveling is crucial. It will also vibrate more with a partial load of heavy items. Paradoxically full loads vibrate less, probably because they distribute better around the tub.

Good luck,

John

>I just bought a front loader set (not the Duet) and while mine doesn't vibrate more than usual, I believe I remember being told that they might.

If possible, have him stack the units (after levelling) so there's more weight on the washer. I'm going to do that shortly just to save the floor space.

>My wife and I have a front loading set, not these, but another brand. The high speed spin cycle is nearly 3 times that of the spin cycle of the top loader. We were told to expect some vibration and it was pretty bad the first few times. The place I bought them from installed the units, but did not level them. I called the service number for the store and they walked me through leveling the machines. Only took about 15 minutes. They still vibrate a little bit, but not nearly what they did before. According to the service line, this is a common problem with their installers not leveling machines. They use contractors for the install work and they are paid by number of machines installed, so they do them as fast as they can.

>I've got a 9400HT and it vibrates quite a bit on the highest spin speed. The unit is leveled properly but the vibration can be significant if you have an especially heavy load (ie. very full). After using it for a year I think that this is normal. At first it was disconcerting. Really, you think "I paid all that money and this thing sounds like that?!". It works great from quilts to silk garments and I would never go back to a top loader.

>If the washer is sitting on concrete flooring, put rubber pads under it. The biggest thing is making sure its level. It will vibrate to some degree not matter what you do. My 2.

>We are going to get out our level and take care of that quickly. It looks like some vibration is inherent in a machine spinning at 1200 RPM with 15 - 20 lbs of clothing.

Thanks for the thoughtful advice.

>Paul, we have had the Duet pair for 4 years. I have noticed that the washer will vibrate with things like blue jeans and the like. The washer tries to get things leveled out before starting the spin by doing several slow turn in an attempt to distribute the load. But things like jeans just aren't going to distribute. Ours does vibrate some, but not enough to have it move on its base. We run our spin on the high speed setting, the next to highest speed.

Good Luck,

Ken

>Thanks, Ken. Except for the vibration, my son loves the machine. This his first experience with a front loader, and with a top loader as his basis of comparison, the vibration is concerning him. We are going to check and re-level it if necessary and just go with it. The vibration only occurs in a spin cycle, and it does not appear to be excessive. 1200 RPM is high enough that if the clothes are not distributed evenly, as you point out in your post, a vibration will occur.

Thanks for taking the time to pass along your experience.
