Magnetic switch modification OK?

Bri in Mtl

>Anything wrong with putting this little collar underneath the OFF button of my TS switch?

It still turns the saw off but with the mod I don't have to rotate the OFF button prior to using the ON button which occurs if the OFF button is fully pressed in.

TIA

Maybe I'm just a worrier, but it seems like the collar could hang up and jam, or that with use and wear, the reduced travel of the STOP button might be insufficient to operate the switch.

>If I understand correctly, you can still shut the saw of with the push of the button. In other words - you just limit the travel of the OFF button.

As long as you don't need to actually lift the color in order to shut the saw OFF, I think it should be fine...

Correct!

Bri in Mtl

>You just have to touch the OFF button to shut the saw off(quite sensitive) but it's only when you fully depress the button does it require the turning of the button to release it from it's fully depressed state.

Thanks

Great help for insurance adjuster ;)

>Me too, I wouldn't want to modify ANY-thing to do with the off switch. I trust the manufactures who build 100,000 of these and do QA and testing, more than I would my own ingenuity to modify it.

I'm not sure I'd want an insurance adjuster gathering the picture and info from this post in make a case against paying the medical bills after I cut off my finger, either ;)

Ya, I know.... I'm an overly cautious worry wart :)

Happy Woodworking!

>Is they way yours works something new? I have magnetic switches on some of my equipment, but they are simple push on/off... nothing else to mess with.

Don't put the collar on to defeat the positive off lock.

>If it really annoys you, consider opening up the switch (unplug first please) and figuring out if the "off" pushbutton is just a standard 22mm pushbutton. It probably is, and it probably just pushes against the off and reset buttons on the thermal overload if your mag switch is anything like mine.

If so, you could probably replace it very easily and cheaply with a standard red mushroom button without the push-lock "feature."

caveat #1: the safety feature isn't a bad idea.

caveat #2: if you aren't comfortable with electricity, don't do the above. :)
