Re: an Eagle Scout project

>It's been maybe three or four years now. since I was an advisor on an Eagle Scout project. One of the folks from church had a Western Red Cedar that needed to come down. The tree fellow dropped it, and the head woodchuck in our woodworkers' club slabbed it out with an Alaskan chain saw mill, with help from the Eagle candidate and several dads. After drying, these turned into a couple of nice Shaker inspired benches, for the grounds at the John Muir National Monument, in Martinez, CA. We had a great time. Maybe a dozen Scouts were involved. Most of the hand tools, and several of the power tools in my shop got a good workout. One of the dads brought over a bucket of rusty goodies for me to clean up and fuss with.
The Eagle candidate runs the project, within his capabilities. The smarter the boy, the more challenge he gets. Answer his questions, point him in the right directions, check up with him frequently and encourage all progress. Have a great time with this, but make sure he is doing the project.
Three of my four got their Eagle awards. The other one was a state-championship level swimmer, and couldn't fit everything into the same life. They're all good men. And we're pretty happy with them.
