flawed thinking

>If one needs the money, trees are causing a problem or they are dying there is reason to remove them. But removing large trees to make room for saplings makes no sense to me. The large trees have survived the vicissitudes of adolescence and they are now in a position to mature. 100 years is middle aged for a Cypress. They must be magnificent trees. Enjoy them for a couple of more generations.

the other problem

Tom Sontag - St. Louis

>Logging smaller quantities of timber is never as profitable to the landowner as they hope. The cost of cutting, trimming and removing the logs to a sawmill often exceed their value when not accompanied by large volume. They might be wonderful logs from a lumber standpoint, but cypress is not one of the higher value species to begin with.

Clearing a few dozen acres of the better logs (oak, walnut, etc.)around here will net the owner 30% of the sawmill value. Do the math even on that best case scenario and this may be a small business venture at best.

>Holly, It would be a wild shot in the dark of finding someone to offer to help find a logger without knowing where you are located.

Here is a list of sawyers by state. Maybe you can find one near you.

If you have not consulted a forester yet, it is highly advisable. Every state has a forestry commission, which may be a good place to start.

>Sounds like your timber is worth logging. But if it's the saplings you're concerned about logging would probably do a lot of damage to them and compact your soil too. As others have said it may not be profitable unless you have some volume to sell.

If you have ever been to an old growth forest it's really a survival of the fitest environment. Let the old trees grow they could grow another hundred years or more and be even more magnificent.

>Holly,

I'd suggest you contact your State Forestry folks. They can advise you on your options, and possible supply you with a timber buyers list. More importantly they can give you ideas on different methods of managing your stand of cypress. Maybe thinning some of the smaller sawlog cypress will target the growth on future crop trees and or best time of the year to harvest etc.

Good luck

N.B. Every time I read read a post about standing trees for sale I am reminded of Huck, in the "Adventures of Tom Sawyer." The more he painted the more it cost him.

I have tiger pelt for sale, still on a tiger though..
