Show me you miter saw stations...

Rob Hix - King George, VA

>Hey all,

I am about to design a miter saw station for the shop. I am thinking that the design will allow for 3 ft on each sie of the blade, so the overall length of the station will be around 6 ft. It main purpose is to allow me to store some handheld power tools as well as to allow me to have a better fence and stop setup for my miter saw.

I would like to see your miter saw stations so I could get some ideas. If there is anything unique about your design, please explain.

Thanks in advance,

Rob Hix

Joe in a Cleveland suburb

>Rob,

Sorry, I don't have a pic handy but I thought I'd pass along to you what I did. It's not fancy. I built a simple open bench and put the miter saw on top (of course). Then using scrap 1/2" ply I added (kinda looks like) I-beam supports on either side of the saw. These I-beam thingies have a back fence which I square up with the saws fence. They are both about 3 feet long. They are screwed into place and I can remove them when/if I want.

Lastly I made a box that pretty much covers the saw but allows full up and down movement. I attached one of those plastic DC collector jobbers to it and hook the hose up when I use it. The box does a really good job of getting the dust.

I mounted the saw using thread rod so I could fine tune it within the frame.

I built a hood and used cardboard to figure out the best design for the wings. This is amazing at keeping the dust within the hood. I can do hundreds of cuts with almost no sawdust up top. I have never bothered to hook up the Dust collector to it yet.

And here it is all clean and purdy!

Personally, I like the saw offset...

John in New Mexico

>Or space permitting, centered in a long table. Being right handed, I like a lot of room on the left side of the saw. An 8' board won't balance well with only 3' of support.

I'd post a pic, but its just a saw on a table. I'd love to build something like Mike shows above!

Sliding the non-slider

Mark Goodall - ATL - tooljunkie

>My CMS doesn't slide front to back (it's not a SMCS) but my stand allows me to sldie the saw left/right as necessary, which gives me two as much space or takes half the room, depending on the way you look at it.

Happy Woodworking!

crosscut station

JRutter

>I use this one for straight crosscuts, but it does have some unique features that I have not seen anywhere else. I removed the stock fence and built and auxilliary platform with aftermarket fence. I get 15" crosscut with a standard 10" saw. The fence is a Scotchman with 1/16" index teeth on the back side that engage the stop.

>Instead of a dedicated station or table I made a roll around cabinet 5'X 24" & 30" tall with 4" locking casters. I have ajustible risers on both ends. I store the saw and a benchtop planer in the cabinet and set on top when needed. I have T-nut inserts and use wing bolts to secure the tools to the bench. I wired the cabinet with plugs at both ends and a long cord. This allows me to use in or out of the shop. I also use it as an extra work bench for assembly, glue up etc. This has worked out very good.

>Mine is 6' wide, and is a 'shelf' 30" deep, no legs. Brackets hold 1,000 lbs per pair, I used 3. I have walked on it (200 lbs). It is high so I can store jointer under it, and for easier work height, nice for lining up cuts (no bending over).

More in pics in link below, here is one from my 'shop overview' link, showing it in use:

>Thanks bunches all,

I would still like to see more, but I have a really good start now. I never thought of the offset idea, but it is definately the way to go. Now I can get started on a design this weekend.

Thanks again,

Re: Questions ...

Ed Mulligan, Cape Cod

>The saw is a 10" Hitachi SCMS. The yellow thing is a Downdrafter.

http://www.rousseauco.com/downdrafter/index.htm

It works well. I always have a sacrificial fence installed so some of the larger dust particles bounce off it and remain on the table but 99 percent of the big stuff and 99.9999 percent of the fine stuff is captured. It's hooked up to a 2 h.p. cyclone.

Without the sacrificial fence virtually everything would be captured.

When I first got it I was thinking about adding wings of some sort to make it more efficient but found that they weren't needed. I use the saw and Downdrafter regularly and have made many thousands of miter cuts with them.

It's not clear from their website but for miter cuts there's a track mounted on the back of my table that allows the DD to move left or right and it swivels to line up with the saw cut.

Price causes some hesitation and may be too high for the casual hobbyist but for production work it's well worth it.

Sure is neater than my shop!

Johanna

>That's a really nice setup. Is there dust collection behind the saw? Is it a sliding miter saw? How deep is that recess in the wall?

Re: Show me you miter saw stations...

Re: Sure is neater than my shop!

J D Thomas

>The recess behind the mitersaw is about 3 1/2", stud depth, and I did it for soon-to-be-installed dust collection. It was fortuitous that the saw's location happened to fall right between 2 studs. It also allowed me to do a bit of electrical upgrading below the bench, since I had a portion of the wall opened up. The saw is not a slider.

As to all the comments about how clean the shop is, I cleaned up for the pic. You should see it today!!

Thanks the comments.
