Thanks

I don't...

I would just add a second HD to the computer, leaving the existing HD as is, and then moving data (not programs) from the old HD to the new one.

The programs are taking all the room!

I have a knoppix image coming down, but it will be a few hours before finished. I can dd if there isn't a better program out there.

>Your new HD should come with a utility to do this. Just follow the instructions carefully. If it's not with the drive go the their web site and look for it.

If you take this route, keep in mind your new drive is likely to be faster than the old. Could be noticeably faster. If you have an app that is sluggish or very drive needy (does a lot of read/writes), you might consider uninstalling it and installing it onto the new drive. Don't forget about defrag too.

I recently added a big drive to my pc. I removed then reinstalled a game (Call of Duty - United Offensive) I play online a lot. It made a huge difference in performance. Loads a lot faster too.

Just a thought.

>Alan,

What I use at home and at work is Acronis True Image Pro (www.acronis.com). As usual, I have no affiliation with the company. Just a very satisfied customer. Let's just say that this software has save my hind end a couple of times.

It is not that expensive, but for a one shot thing you can probably use the trial verison. If I remember correctly it is fully functional, but you may want to check.

>Ghost, Acronis or several others. You can buy them, or google Hiren's boot cd. It comes with earlier versions of Ghost, True Image and a few others I can't think of, as well as a whole host of other extremely useful apps. As the title says, it is a boot cd. It won't cost anything to try. Install your new drive in the same pc, format it, then boot to the cd and use one of the above utilities to make an image of your old drive on the new drive. Then make the new one your boot drive and try booting to it. If that doesn't work, try one of the other apps. I've imaged and restored to both ghost and true image using the free boot cd. Strangely enough, I've had problems with the newest commercial version of both Ghost and TI imaging (although that was imaging to a dvd, a different proposition). In any case, it's free, and you are not messing up your old drive at all.

Whenever I buy a new computer

A dd if=/dev/hda of=/dev/hdb

then a parted session to expand the NTFS partition to full disk size.

It also did not work on the last system I changed a hard drive on.

>Here's another option: Image for DOS & Windows. I've done backups and restores with no issues. I believe they also have a Linux version. I don't know how functional the trial version is. The company also makes a multi-boot and partition management program, Bootit NG. One caution with any image program-make sure the resulting CD's, DVD's or whatever are readable. Nothing like having an 8 CD image set and have the 8th one abort due to corrupt data. DAMHIKT.
