Spray Finishing

mdclor

>Hi to all,

I am considering adding a small spray room to my shop and intend to use waterborne finishes. Should I include an exhaust fan for this? Do the fan and the light fixtures need to be explosion proof? I will wear an appropriate mask during spraying. Is there anything else I need to consider?

Thanks,

Merle

Yes, you should have a fan to keep the overspray from settling on your finished item. As long as you used waterborne finishes, you do not need an explosion proof lights or fan.

>Yes to exhaust fan (as previous poster said, removes overspray-a box fan with a furnace filter will do). No to explosion proof fixtures (there are volatile organics in wb finishes, but I don't believe they pose an explosion risk at the concentrations that you would be creating-but a source of fresh air is a good idea). Yes to mask (with organics cartridge-the organics in a wb finish are not terribly good for you).

My $0.02 and worth every cent you paid for it,

Nick
