Bessey Clamps - again

Hub in Ontario

>The other day I posted a picture (below) of my current method for storing Bessey clamps that takes up considerable wall space and asked for suggestions on how you folks store yours. I was looking for someone who had come up with a system that makes more efficient use of space but I probably didnt articulate this very well.

This morning I knocked out a prototype for what I had kicking around in that vast space above my shoulders (thankfully not as vast as the space below the shoulders).

Anyone have experience with this type of storage. This one is holding 18 clamps in a space that is 10 along the wall and 14 out from the wall and it appears pretty solid but I will make the next one about 2 wider as they get a little close at the bottom. I might put a little strip of wood on the top plate at the outside edge to force the clamps out a bit

The new pictures are on posts two and three and on post four while I am at it for those of you I havent met which is almost all of you, is a picture of me thinking about it,

Thanks for looking

I've been wanting to do something similar like you show. In your design, what keeps the clamps from being knocked off the hanger?

Thanks.

>Like Joe says, when I hang stuff in that manner, I always manage to swing a long board just right to bring half of it clattering down on top of something else. Probably it's the trifocals unfocused that makes this more likely to happen.

I hang my clamps of that type on the rim of a 55-gallon drum into which I pitch little scraps. The drum sits on wheels (some yard sale at a factory) so I can roll the clamps close. When I get enough of those clamps, I'll have to put the rest inside. Right now I can get about twenty Bessey and Jorgy clamps on the drum.

>In my orginal hanger, I never had a problem with the clamps comingoff as long as I put them on so they didn't start rocking when I walked away. Put them on fully and completely (sounds like a Tragically Hip song) and they will stay. As I said though, I may put a small strip of wood at the outer edge to tip them a bit out

>Think about this for a moment though, what if I put a three inch piece of wood along the length of the top, between the rows of clamps and attached another piece of wood the same as the piece that the clamps rest on top for a type of I beam. The top pice would only serve prevent the clamps from tipping back and out on their own.

Does this sound dumb or too complicated?

Minor Hijack - Bessey Clamps on sale

Jim Swank

>There's a farm supply store in the Milwaukee called Blain's Farm and Fleet. I was in the other day to pick up some plumbing supplies (ugh). They had 50 inch K bodies on sale just under $32 each. Alas, I had no discretionary funds...

Not associated wih the store, just buy stuff there.

Why doncha add another shelf to hang shorter clamps?

>Thanks, my concern would be that the short clamps are as long across the clamping face so I would have to make the top plate considerably wider. I am thinking of making another bracket to hang above the long clamp bracket.

Thanks for the input

>Put some sticky back sandpaper on the surfaces of the shelves to help prevent the clamps from falling off.

I did that after noticing one day that hammering a nail into an adjacent wall caused the clamps to move around a bit. I figured a long thunderstorm someday might make one fall on something and damage it/ damage the something.

Or better yet, make a hinged retaining bar that could easily be rotated upwards to release the clamp. Kind of like the seat bar on a roller coaster.

>Hub,

See my post below for possible retaining mechanism. Also:

My Besseys are on a rack on the wall (need to take your 3d approach, soon, however).

My clamp rack is actually a series of fingers (or slots, depending on how you look at it). Each Bessey, etc. fits into a slot so it is supported to its outermost edge. I added a piece of wood below to the wall that prevents the lower end of the clamp from being pushed in against the wall, thereby eliminating the possibility of tipping. Further, the top surface of the fingered board is covered with sandpaper. You have to pick up the clamp slightly in order to remove it from the shelf.

I should also note that I made the rack to hold the clamps in the closed position, and such that you grab the handscrew to remove them. Nothing wrong with your open storage solution, though.

My clamps are "hiding" behind my cyclones filter in an otherwise useless corner.

I'll try to post a picture today.

Here's some of my racks...

Grant Smith(remove 1 for email)

>I obviously haven't incorporated all of the features I have suggested, but anyway, they are working for me until I get around to a redesign...

Note the cleat on the wall to the left below the rack... keeps clamps from "leaning forward" and becoming unstable. I have also installed sticky back sandpaper on the left shelf (but not on the Bessey rack yet) to prevent slipping.

I like grabbing the clamps by the handle, and that is why I have them oriented that way...

Something like what I have built, but in a more 3 dimensional design (combine mine with yours) and that'd be a pretty good setup in terms of space and usability.
