New Yankee Workshop Entrance Door Musings

>Did anyone else notice Norm used a wood headed mallet to strike a chisel like a galoot when he was installing the strike plate? But he redeemed himself nicely by earlier using a dedicated door lock mortiser (Porter-Cable 513) and a 3-hinge template (Porter-Cable 59380)... I seem to remember these two things being used on a recent This Old House episode, maybe by Tom Silva.

The loose tenons he made with a router seemed like a good time to introduce a new power-tool into the shop.... namely the Festool Domino!

Its also interesting to note that on the New Yankee webcam you can see that he used the wide belt sander, but in the episode he only mentioned needing to sand the joints flush and showed him with a random-orbit sander in his hand... I guess Delta/Porter-Cable doesnt like seeing the Timesaver getting airtime!

PC Still Sponsors?

Garrett in Victoria BC

>The last program I saw, the Porter Cable Decals had been removed from his brad nailers and routers, so perhaps they're no longer sponsoring him. However, the colours were original, so the 'disguise' wasn't very effective.

Cheers, Garrett

Thanks for the heads up.

>Even though I don't get that episode until this coming weekend, it's nice to have an early warning on new featured tools so I can go out and grab images and prepare my writeups for the Norm's Tools section on my website.

Done and done.

I've been looking past the disguises for so long I no longer recognize if or that they are there. The last one I remember was when he was running the Makita D-Handle router with the gray duct tape over the logo. The gray perfectly matched the gray of the tool while covering the blue embossed logo—which telegraphed through the tape to be perfectly readable.

Actually, the thing I noted toward the end of last year's season was that the Sencos, the Lamellos, and the Bosches seemed to have disappeared in favor of the P-C equivalents. Odd, then, that they are bringing a Festool in, although they've been being used for several years now on This Old House.

In the end, I'd say that with P-C and Delta still listed as donors, even with the B&D ownership, P-C is still going to be featured.

Norm didn't use a Festool Domino... he used a router to make the tenon pockets.

>Delta and P-C are still sponsors so are Thompson Waterseal and Minwax, but this season they added Rockler and Titebond and dropped Columbia Flooring... Columbia Flooring seemed like an odd sponsor anyway (did Norm ever use any of their product on NYW?)...does the fact that I notice these things make me a Normhead?

When a product supplied by one of the shows underwriters the manufacturers label must be removed or blocked out with tape... it's a requirement of PBS.

>Rob is correct. My poorly worded sentence made it sound like he used the Festool, but what I meant was that if they were ever going to use one that would have been the perfect application.

>Rod,

No problem!

A few weeks ago I sent you an email from my Yahoo account on the dado jig he built for use with a router in the Library System (1713) episode. I don't know if you're keeping tab of all the shop built jigs, but I just happened to tape that episode and grabbed a few frames from it and sent them to you. I remember that he also made a similar jig in the Router-101 episode.

Thanks. I got that. I see that I hadn't responded—sorry. I haven't incorporated it into the site yet. I need to get to that—I do have some of his shop made jigs there.

In any event, I appreciate your contributions and I've credited you on my site for the ones you've helped me with.

By the way, you should feel free to use your whole name here instead of just the initials. Much more familial. Knowing who you are changed the whole dynamic of this thread for me.
