OT: Lenovo TFT 19" LCD Monitor

Robert Hutchins

>Pardon the bandwidth consumption please, but I need opinions from the cognoscenti here about LCD monitors.

I have the opportunity to get a new Lenovo 19" TFT LCD monitor for $240 delivered. From what I've read, the TFT technology is good (but compared to what might be better, I don't know). The contrast ratio is 700:1 and the refresh rate is 8 ms and the viewing angle is 170 .

Can anyone compare this - favorably or otherwise - with other monitors? Can I better spend my money on another brand? I'm currently using an old (12-14 years) Dell 15" color monitor. Based on the 37" LCD TV Her Ladyship bought a few months ago, and on the few LCD monitors, I've seen in store displays, this technology is at least as good as my old monitor and will take up far less desktop space.

Would really appreciate hearing your opinions and experience with LCD monitors.

TIA

>I haven't followed LCDs in 8-9 months. Back when I was, Dell made some of the best displays, especially given their low prices and frequent rebates. I bought a Dell 2007FPW 20" widescreen LCD; it's truely the best display I've ever owned! The only thing I know about Lenovo is that they bought IBM's Thinkpad laptop business... and ruined it. Aside from Dell, Samsung is probably the only other LCD vendor I'd trust without a lot of research...

Info from my 18 year old...

Mike Circo

>When he wanted his graduation present of a flat panel monitor, he gave very explicit instructions...

1000:1 contrast ratio.

4ms response time.

And some special cable connection I forget the name of. Really popular for powerful video games.

I got an LG 17" monitor for $240 and he loved it. What their 19" will go for I don't quite know. But those stats seem to be for "Better" monitors. The "Best" have even more, that LG is better than the "Good".

Okay, very general, but you asked a general question.

Oh... Lenovo is the Chinese owned business which bought out the production rights to IBM Personal Computers. No more IBM branded computers smaller than a sofa.

>Try pcconnection.com and look for their 17" and 19" Hanns-G monitors. You'll be amazed at the price if they still have them in stock. If you don't mind rebates, you can't beat the price. I've set up a half dozen, only 1 dead pixel, nice color and no complaints yet.

>I highly recommend Samsung monitors. 19" flat panel monitors can be had for under $200 without a sale or rebates. Also check out www.Newegg.com They have some of the best prices around and a wonderful filtering tool that you can use to narrow down your search.

Mike-in-Michigan

>Also check out Newegg.com and the Hanns-G monitors see the link, it's 190$ w/free shipping. We've bought several at some customers, seem to be real nice. 700:1 contrast & 5ms response is good on these,it's comparable with other 19"'s on the market today. Viewing angle on the Lenovo is better .. the Hanns-G is only 150dg & 135dg which means the angle you can be from the screen and still see it good. 150 side to side & 135 up and down. This is not that good but for most use I don't have a problem with it.

You can also look for DVI-D connections and Analog SUB-D connections. The DVI-D (digital video) is the hot ticket for higher end systems, it give somewhat better video and quicker response times. If you are just doing home stuff or business and not a big gamer or such, you won't notice the difference. The monitor comes with a DVI cable too which can cost a few bucks if you buy a monitor, need digital video and don't have it. Best Buy will try and sell you high end DVI for 75$ but don't worry, the cheap ones that come with the monitor work fine.

Slight hijack - why would I want widescreen?

Tim Greif - West of Chicago

>I don't understand why I'd want a widescreen monitor for a computer. But I'm seeing them all over the place. Is this for playing motion picture DVDs or video games (none of which I do)? Help. I just want a 19" flatpanel for these tired old eyes.

>There is a 19" Samsung listed for $199.95 delivered - open box with 3 year warranty. http://www.pricewatch.com/brands/monitors/samsung-2.htm

Might want to look at the other prices / models listed. I do a lot of purchasing based on that site. Just bought $600+ of parts to build a new computer for my house. I have built at least a dozen over the last few years and use that site almost exclusively. I have yet to be "taken" - I do rely on the Manufacturer's warranty, don't really like to have a middleman involved anyhow. I can't remember the last time I had to return anything anyhow. By the time a computer memory, board or drive fails, it usually costs more for shipping than the item, as the prices drop so fast when they are replaced by faster better items.

open item is not new IMO

Joe Piotrowski - Chicago Burb's

>I don't trust open item boxes on certain things. monitors being one. sure it can have warranty, if it covers what is wrong with it.

If I could find one under 200 new in the box that would be sweet.

depends

Joe Piotrowski - Chicago Burb's

>it can be for movies and such but there is a nice work benefit for media files, excel even programming.

on a high resolution screen you can open two word docs next to each other.

floating menu type toolbar pallet programs such as Gimp would benefit from the real estate. assuming your pc can generate the required resoluiton.

all in all the bigger the better. personally I only consider 19" and up for widescreen usage. it losses less vertical space for the everyday doc reading.

I really want a apple cinema screen 30" monitor!

Keep in mind

Mark Goodall - ATL - tooljunkie

>I help many clients move to LCD panels on their computers. Many.

Here are a few things to remember.

EVERY manufacture makes MANY different models at any one given point in time, and the fact that each manufacture has been making them for a while and it means that there a many, many different ones from the same manufacuter.

Just about every manufacture makes better quality ones and less quality ones.

Name brand does count (at least for me) often in initial quality and more often in longevity.

The market is saturated with inventory and there's no guarentee that the model you buy is it that manufacuters most recent offering.

You tend to get what you pay for.

Specifications are good to compare, but unlike a PC where 1GB of RAM is 1GB, and a 3.4Ghz is 3.4GHz, when it comes to LCD technology, many people "see" things differently, and what is acceptable to some is not to others. I'm amazed at the lower quality that some people buy for themselves and think is "clear".

Buying a LCD panel where you can actually see it in action first is often a good idea.

Unless you spend a good bit of money, LCD panels tend to offer less quality image compared to CRT monitors (althoug they are getting better every day).

Don't overbuy. If you recently bought a PC which you expect to keep for 3 years, and it has a analog D (standard) monitor cable, you don't need a digital LCD panel with a DVI plug, as you won't use it. If you have a PC with a DVI output them make sure you get a digital LCD panel with DVI inputs.

Yuo can save deskspace getting builtin speakers, but some people prefer the sound of "real" speakers even though it clutters the desk a bit more.

Thanks all I can think of at the moment.

Oh and you can often buy two better quality monitors and use split screen if your PC video card can handle it rather than one huge LCD panel for less money. Two 19" LCD's instead of one 24" for instance. This isn't any good for movie watching but great for computing.

Oh, and if you wait one more day the one you want will be cheaper. And if you want one more day after that they will have a newer version that you want even more ;)

Happy Woodworking!

Thanks, Mark and All !

Robert Hutchins

>The Lenovo was back ordered for 60 days so I checked out pcconnection.com for a Hanns-G. They had a 19" with built in speakers, 700:1 contrast ratio and 8ms refresh rate, and DVI connection capability for $100 after rebate. Taxes and deivery charges add about $45, but that saves a C-note for me.

Thanks again for the suggestions.

That said, Fry's is a pretty good place to buy stuff, if you know what you want.

I got one and I love it because

Mike in Paradise

>I can put two full size windows beside each other on the wide screen monitor and with my 2nd screen that gives me 3 full size windows of viewing at the same time.

This is good for reference, look-ups.

Cut and paste transferring information.

Keep help screen for a program up on one window while working on the other

Put a tutorial on one window while working on the other with the actual program.

Put your tools on one window while your cad drawing, picture etc is full screen on another window.

Watch TV in one while you are working on another.

Have your stock quotes streaming on one window while you are browsing for company info on another.

Running the code debugger on one window while running the program on another.

Try it and you will never want to go back!

My wife said the same thing when I gave her the second screen. I knew she would say that she does not want it so I just installed it on her desk when she was away.

NOW SHE ADMITS THAT I WAS RIGHT!

Hey you got to take those moments when you can get them! She says that she would find it difficult to work without the second screen and agrees that a 3rd screen would be useful.
