>I have a shot at a great deal on a 5hp saw that is stated as 200/230/460-3 phase. Will this work on standard household 220-240 circuits. If not what are my options? I have seen some post in the past on similar topics, I think.
>One very good option is a variable frequency controller. They aren't that expensive and you could have your local motor repair place install it. It runs on 220 single phase. although they will give you variable speed you can have it set to run at one speed.
Most of the modern lathes run on one of those. I've installed 2 of them but they really push my electrical abilities. I would get the motor and then check with a good electrician who knows industrial motors and controllers and have them counsel you on what to buy and then istall it for you.
>I used a static converter for years, which ran a shop full of 3-phase machinery until I moved to a shop w/ 3-phase. Yes you lose 1/3 power, but with 5 HP you should have plenty unless you are power ripping 8/4 stock...
