Windows

Al Hendrickson

>Hello. I'm looking for advice on the best way to make some windows. I closed in a porch on the backside of my house with a waist high wall. I used 4x4's every 36" as supports for the roof and used 2x6's for the sill. The openings are screened from the outside using surface attached trim mouldings. The problem I have,is rain blowing in from storms (eaves aren't extended to far). As a result, I was considering making pairs of windows for each opening and having them open inward.

I would appreciate any advice you might give on the best approach for making simple windows (single payne).

Thank you for your time.

Casements

>Making casement windows is a large topic, more worthy of a book than a messageboard response. There are a lot of considerations, not least of which are: how fancy do the windows have to be? how big are they? how will you open and close them? does single pane mean single thermopane? how will you finish them?

Once you figure out those things, you can refer to one of the books on the subject to get more information about joinery options, glazing options, hardware, weatherstripping and drainage considerations. I can't recommend a particular book but I'll bet some of our visitors can give you a steer. There was a book called "Homemade Doors and Windows" that came out about 25 years ago that might have some simpler construction drawings and details for you. Fine HOmebuilding probably has published books and articles on the subject, so it might be worth cruising their website, too.
