>and also re-learning html.(forgot most of what I knew.) It appears that the experts now frown on the use of frames for setting up the Index file or "home page" as I call it. What is the accepted method of setting up such a file that allows some flexibility but doesn't require an html major degree?

>Yes, frames are ancient and bad :) They are 10+ years old.... in computers years that's about 200 years old.

Depending on what server you are using (UNIX-PHP or Windows-ASP) you can use SSI and what program you are using (Notepad, SiteBuilder(s), FrontPAge, Dreamweaver)..... you can use SSI (Server Side Includes) or PHP/ASP based includes (where you keep repeating code, like the header/footer code in a separate file(s) and then each page "includes" them as appropriate) or better yet FrontPage and/or Dreamweaver Templates (not to be confused with PreBuilt website templates that come free with (shudder) those DIY-in-15-minute web hosting packages, or can be purchased (and used with Dreamweaver, etc).

which is sort of inbetween the cookie-cutter (cheap but limited) DIY sites that everyone offers, and the completely custom (expensive but unlimited) web site that either you build or someone like I build for you. Typically all those cookie-cutter sites offer ways to easily build/keep catalogs, galleries, shopping carts, etc but yuo are limited in what you can do to your site. I've built something similar, but it can be tied into your own custom website. Hard to explain in words. Take a look. I'm working on a way that you could take a demo ride.

Happy Woodworking!

>One problem is that many ISP's don't allow SSI. I know that the Yahoo business sites do not. Sure wish they did, as it can make a big difference in performance.

>I have read today I have decided I don't need frames. Things appear to have changed quite a bit since I last fooled with html. I am also slower learning, but I have found several tutorial sites which are helping. Most of them are pretty sketchy though.

>Depending on how much effort you want to put into it, you may want to look into using css to format your page. It gives you a lot of flexibility, and many sites are beginning to go that way. I am posting a link to a site I put together for Dale Lenz. It is run completely by CSS. No tables or frames and the text formatting etc. are all done in CSS. Look at the page source to see what the code looks like.
