Way OT - Any Experience Here With KIA Cars?

Howard In Toronto

>Hi all -

Ordinarily I wouldn't look at either Hyundai or KIA cars.

BUT....

KIA has frecently come out with a "mini-mini-van" that challenges the Mazda5.

I'd actually been very interested in the Mazda5 but soooooo many of its details are waaaaay off for me.

The KIA Rondo, on the other hand suits me PERFECTLY - overall size, interior room, performance, safety features etc.

But KIA's quality history leaves me apprehensive. The showroom salesman says things have improved greatly in the past year or two; auto journalists LOVE the car - but they only get the car for a week or so.

So, does anyone here have a KIA product? If so, how would you describe reliability, longevity of parts (brakes etc), fuel consumption etc.

Thank you.

Howard

possibly irrelevant

>This info might be too old to be relevant but.....

I owned an '88 Ford Aspire (tiny econobox) which was built for Ford by Kia. I drove it from 20k to 95k miles with no problems and only replaced wear items (exhaust, brakes, and tires). I changed fluids regularly.

Now this car was bare bones so there weren't many systems on it that could crap out and warrant a big repair bill but drivetrain-wise, it was great.

Obviously, that's a long time ago but my only experience with Kia was decent.

>My son has a Kia Sedona and is quite unhappy with it. The engine and drive train haven't given him any trouble yet, but stuff keeps breaking off, including door handles, winshield wipers, cup holder, etc. The dealer also wasn't particularly cooperative on warrenty repairs. He was against getting it, but his wife wanted it and won the argument. This is one of those precious "I told you so's". Gene Gauss

>We have a Kia Sportage, 7 years with no problems that were not taken care of by the dealer. It has been a good vehicle and experience. We would and may purchase another in a few more years as we will keep this one till 10 years is up.

>I bought my daugher a Kia Rio5 a year or so ago, and see loves it.

She has had someone break rear window wiper broken, and a couple of other things, and K1a replaced anything broken, and did regular services, including oil and filters changed, for free.

Rented their 4x4 last year,

>And it was a good ride. We were in Denver for some skiing and the Sorento that we rented performed real well in the snowy conditions. I was a bit leery of getting a KIA after hearing some of the old quality stories on this make, but the 2006 model we got ran fine, felt solid, and the quality was good enough for the price range.

How About A Hyundi Pony?

>Howard, I know they are old news, but you mentioned Hyundai, but my daughter had one and beat the snot out of it for about 8 - 9 years in Winterpeg. Hauled her kids and dogs around in it, abused it, didn't service it, and finally got rid of it when the fenders literally rusted off it (prolly had something to do with all the salt). It was reliable transportation for her and her family and she has often said that she would buy another one.

Gerry, in snowbound Surrey.
