OT: House Painting Sprayer

>I have a decent Air Compressor, and have quite a few spray guns for spraying lacquer for my woodturning (including a gun that cost $400). But now I would like to opinions on a System/Spray gun for spraying house paint.

My immediate need is for spraying exterior paint. Can I get by with a cheap gun from Harbor Freight, or buy one of the systems like Wagner XTRA Paint Crew, or CH HVLP Project Painting system?

Thoughts?

>If your going to be using high quality paint I wouldn't waste one dollar trying to spray it with air. Rent a professional airless sprayer. The aggrivation of thining the paint and adding a flow agent then it doesn't look anywhere near as good as a airless sprayer.

>Mark , my first thought is don't.

More than likely your house has a coating of oxide paint and loose scales like most others.

Spray paint looks great for about 6 months.

It does not penetrate like a brush or a roller.

If I were you I would invest and a power roller and a decent trim brush and you will be surprised how quick it will be and how much longer it will last.

The paint a swear by is called "Rnviroguard" here and lasts Canadian winters for about 15 years. A top quality at around $50.00/gallon, but, one coat often too.

p.s buy a good scraper and plenty of blades and some outdoor spackle.

>is to find your local PRO paint supplier, and find 20 minutes during their slow time of day, and talk to them. I've used rented (or borrowed) Binks brand airless sprayers (although it has been a while), and gotten excellent results in three western states. In any case, they will be able to get you the right combination of sprayer, jets, paint(s), brushes, rollers, tarps, primers, etc. that it takes to do a really good job. Prep is the key.

Don't tell me you can paint outdoors where you are this time of year? Not waterbased, I'd think. It's too cold for guaranteed success in the SF Bay area right now, although today was in the mid-60s. Thursday night is expected to drop to the mid-20s.

Actually, it will be a month or two before I plan to paint.

Depends on what you are coating.

>Brushes and rollers can make aluminum or steel siding look awful. Wood siding (and any other with any texture to it) should always be back-brushed or back-rolled--to work paint into the nooks and crannies. I'm sure there are many hacks out there just spraying on a quick coat of paint for a quick buck, but some of us pros rely on the speed gained with a sprayer to stay competitive AND profitable. As in many cases, the sprayer's function here is to replace lugging around a bucket and dipping, not to replace the brush or roller.

I have one of these ... *LINK*

>A couple of years ago a friend and I split the cost of a decent homeowner-grade airless sprayer like the one shown in the link. (Looks like the exact model we bought is no longer sold, but this appears similar.) One of the best tool purchases I have ever made. He painted the outside of his house with it. I used it to paint the outside of my new stucco garage/workshop, the inside of the garage/workshop, the inside of new construction we did on the house, and the outside of the house. Renting an airless sprayer for all those jobs would have paid for this sprayer three times over. The only criticism I have of my unit is that the hose is only 25' long, which is awkward at times. I don't think the unit puts out enough pressure to add another section of hose.

I wouldn't even think about trying to use an air-powered spray gun for exterior house painting. Air-powered guns just don't throw out enough paint. I suspect an air-powered gun would end up being slower than doing the whole thing by roller and brush.

Get the paint on the wall with an airless sprayer. Back-roll or back-brush the paint into the surface. It's a good balance between speed and quality.

Good luck!

>You can purchase the Wagner Paint Crew airless sprayer for less than $200.00 and it is an great little machine. I used mine to paint the exterior of my house which is rough stucco using Behr brand paint with no problems. I did not have a single spray clog since I strained the paint using one of the net strainers that Home Depot sells. The only complaint that I have heard about this sprayer is that you have to spend about an hour cleaning it. The spray gun is excellent and since my house is one story, the 25' hose was not a problem. Home Depot has a version that I believe has a 35' hose.

>Hi Mark!

We have been doing a lot of painting the past couple of years while remodeling our cabin. First of all, good paint is worth it! Second, good equipment is worth it!! Many good paint stores will rent professional quality airless sprayers - we rented a Graco. You can buy one of these, but for the price they are not worth it to you, with the little bit you are painting (one house is just a little bit!). These professional sprayers are really great, and they usually rent for $50 to $80 per day, maybe less if you buy the paint there. Be prepared to brush and roll - the sprayer applies the paint and the brush and roller work it in. Wear protective clothing and at least a hood, better yet a respirator. My Wife and I primed and painted all the interior walls of our cabin, both levels, about 2000sq/ft of floor space in one long weekend - she sprayed and I came behind with a roller and a brush. It can be done!

Good Luck!

Scott.

>My business is remodeling, and from time to time we paint houses. I bought this sprayer thinking that it would be good for smaller jobs like painting an addition or large interiors. But it has rapidly become the machine of choice for myself and the guys.

It sprays any paint I have found unthinned. It throws a lot or little paint by adjustment. It has a reversible tip and all parts and filters (check the one in the handle frequently) are easily available from HD. Best of all, I can clean this machine in about 15 minutes!

I do put their "Armor guard" (something like that) in the machine when it is stored over the winter or between jobs. I have also bought another 25' of hose and a swivel to make it easier to use. Other than that, it is factory all the way.

We have painted and primed too many projects to remember, and at least 10 homes (2 coats each) with this machine. When this one dies, I will buy another. No more $800 - $1200 dollar machines for me unless I am painting a warehouse.
