Cutting "perpendicular " mortices?

Doug in Denver

>I have a hollow chisel morticer, and cutting mortices along the length of a piece of wood is simple enough - just slide the wood along the fence as you make repetitive plunges. But what about mortices that are perpendicular to the fence? What is the best way to make sure they are straight? I thought of using carpet tape to attach a block of wood to the board to use as a guide to slide the side of the chisel against as I move the fence out for each cut. Is there a better way I an not thinking of?

>Make an Auxillary table for your morticer with a cross cut guide slot like your table saw. Use your miter gage to guide the part.

>I put a small vise that has in/out and side-to-side movements in place of the rather imprecise fence/hold down system on my hollow chisel mortiser. It's a machinist's vise that has a flat top with T-slots. I can use threaded hold-downs, but I generally work out a way to clamp stuff to the top. I think I have about four inches of in/out and six inches of side to side movement.

spacer blocks

Robin Corell, Atascadero CA

>Set the fence for the furthest point and then use spacer boards the with of the chisel you are using to put the board in the correct position for the first cut. then it is just a matter of removing one spacer at a time and making cuts untill the board is aginst the fence for the final cut. The advantage of this tecnique over a cross slide vise is that it is just a matter of replacing all the spacers to reset for the next part to be mortised. Of couse using a stop block for the length goes without saying.

>I got my vise from Grizzly. I have the 4" vise. Later I bought another one for my drill press, this time from Harbor Freight; I cannot tell the difference between the two. Both work the same and are adjustable for finetuning the movement. A vise will run you about $45.
