TO Transfering video tape to DVD

Ernie Miller

>Does any one know how to transfer video tapes over to DVD's I got a new puter with a DVD burner and a digital camcorder. now I want to convert all of my old video taped to DVD. I have about 50 tapes of vacations and family. it sure would be nice to convert every thing over and junk the old players and recorders.

>Here's one way - I purchased an external DVD burner last Spring that allows you to plug in your external player and burn the DVD's directly. The product that I purchased is Sony VRDMC1 and it offers S-Video and Composite Video inputs so that you can connect your VCR or camcorder directly to this burner and then play the movie on the player and record on the burner. Very simple to use and works well.

>Radio Shack sells a unit for about $100 that you hook up to your VCR and play the tape as usual in your VCR and burn a DVD in the unit. A friend has one and he has been burning DVD's from all his old VCR tapes and the results are great.

>Not as easy as buying a separate DVD recorder, but you might already have what you need to do the job on your new 'puter.

If your PC has a video capture card and software, you're all set. From your VCR, connect the audio cable to the audio card and the video cable to the video input. Then run the video editing software to do the transfer. If you don't have a dedicated video capture card, your graphics card might have a video input jack that will allow you to do the same thing. If not, buying a separate DVD recorder is probably the easier way (but not necessarily cheaper).

A while ago I purchased a video tuner card for my PC that also does video capture. I transfered my camcorder tapes to DVDs quite easily.

>The easiest way is to buy a stand alone DVD recorder. That will just record your tapes to DVD, it is relatively inexpensive any more.

If you want to edit your movies and have all the menus and scene selections and are willing to spend the time then you can get amazing results with your computer, but it takes quite a bit of time. for starters you must transfer your movies to the computer in real time. if you have an hour of video it will take an hour to copy. then the time for editing which can take a tremendous amount of time, then when you are actually ready to copy to disc you must go through a lengthy compression phase which can take several hours to compress and burn to disc. follow this link for more in depth info.
