WC Weekend Accomplishments....

Dennis E Peacock

>Good Morning Everyone,

It's been a whirlwind of a week for last week. I was oncall for the day job and wound up working a few nights as well. Being 47, I'm finding it harder to do an all-nighter at work than it used to be.

Needless to say that I didn't get ANY shop time over the last 7 days and I'm in the final spray finishing phase for the computer desk project. YEA!!!!!

I will move both tops inside the house to cure for about 1 week and then begin a minor rubout of the top finish and deliver the desk.

Once I can get the shop clear of the critical finish, I can start some serious work on the kitchen table and a quick and dirt chest of drawers to be used for a "changing table" for a couple of friends at church.

After all that, I plan on starting the LOML's new kitchen pantry and start roughing out several pieces on the lathe to get back to the spinny side of life.

So what did YOU do this weekend?

Best of weeks to you all.

Dennis

Got Tired Thinking About Dennis' Activities

George@Colonel's Workshop-Havertown PA

>Geeze Dennis,

Sometimes you have to practise being retired, so when that day finally arrives, you'll be prepared. My own efforts in the shop resulted in finishing up a little medicine box I built from white/red oak with red cedar dovetailed ends and oak back, front and coopered top. I received a new 17/32 straight bit and used it to make a box tray. I finished it all with a couple seal coats of shellac and several coats of brushing lacquer. SWMBO gave me hell over the smell and I was ejected from the house, and took out my frustrations on my chain saw, making 20 bowl blanks from hunks of fir logs. Today my best friend and I will bandsaw and anchor seal them. We watched the Eagles fly over New York Giants last night. I sure admire Tiki Barbar.

>I slept part of Saturday trying to catch up after several long days at a client site. On Sunday I finished the inside of two of the 4 wall cabinets and assembled them. Hope to do the other two today.

Re: Waxed my Bessey K Body Clamps....

Michael Wangler in Rochester, NY

>I have a bunch of Bessey K body clamps and noticed over time that the yellow glue seems to hold very well to the metal bar and builds up easily. Sometimes this seems to affect the operation of the clamp and the ability to close it up against the wood. It was also noted that this glue does not easily come of the bar. Over the weekend I soaked each clamp (with a hot wet rag) and then scrapped the glue off the surface. I was hesitant to put wax (paste wax - bowling alley formulation) on the bar (fearing slippage), but it figured I would try it on one of them. The clamp works much better and there was no slippage. I ended up cleaning and waxing all of them. I also waxed the threaded screw portion. I would recommend it on your Besseys!

>This was my first time in the shop in forever! I managed to make a carved walking stick with a mount in the top for my camers. I need to turn a finial for it with an insert so it screws on when the camera is not mounted. I carved some twistys on the handle part and some decorations just below that. tapered it with some planes. aluminum ones sell for more than I want to part with and this one is so much better.

>Sorry, here's the description of the picture. All I got to do is put a final coat of wax and oil on this cutting board. It was a Christmas present for my wife. She didn't seem to mind getting it late. It was in Wood Magazine a few months back.

>I have been working finishing the other half of my basement for a while now. This weekend I did the final sanding on the drywall and primed the whole place. My shop is now storage, so I can't wait to get enough done in there to move the furniture back out of the shop.

>I spent most of this weekend troubleshooting and, ultimately, replacing the garage door opener. The darn thing would open, but refused to close. Ended up with a quieter opener with some nice features as well.

>I finished up a gift box for my mother-in-law. It's a mitered box made from walnut with Purpleheart Keys and the top is made from Redwood Burl veneer. I gave it to her today - needless to say, she liked it alot.

>I have an answer to your retiree excess capacity! How about online advisor...

My brother made me the most beautiful oak cupboard. The only problem is that is smells to high heaven, especially in the summer months. It has been resigned to the garage. It is, however, really beautiful and I'd love to know how to fishish is so that it doesn't smell so much. Searching through the sites, it looks like shellac is my answer, but I'm not sure. Please advise if you can...

Yours,

Jennifer

>They use a shellac based primer to seal the inside of houses that have had a fire to seal out the smell. I figure if it can do that, it should work for sealing the inside of furniture.
