Staining Pine?

Craig (in NJ)

>I am trying to stain some pine chair rail and floor molding to match (at least come close to) the color of the wainscoting. In my past experiences with staining pine the finish came out blochy. Are there any steps I can take (i.e. use a sanding sealer, precoat with something...) to get stained pine to be more even. Should I try to dye the pine instead? Would that have a better chance of being even? Thanks for any tips.

>Minwax makes a 'staining conditioner' that works well for me on pine. I've also used glue size or a one pound coat of shellac. Sanding sealer should work, too. Just try whatever you chose on some scrap first.

>I have had luck with gel stains on soft wood like pine. You can control it a lot better.
