Drawer stop idea for 2 sided drawer - Opinions?

Craig Daymon

>I was looking at the latest Pop Woodworking and reading the article on Greene and Greene drawer construction. I'm a big G&G fan, so I was thinking of making workbench cabinets with a G&G style. (Probably no ebony slides though, just pinned box joints.) With workbench drawers, I was thinking that it would be nice to be able to open them from either side of the bench, but at the same time I'd like a registered stop to keep the drawers from sliding too far in when closed or pulling too far out.

So I'm thinking (understand the thought is not complete yet) that if I can create a tongue that would somehow connect into the drawer handle and be pulled in when the handle is grasped, the drawer could be pulled out until the tongue for the other side makes contact with a stop on the side being pulled. Closing the drawer, the far tongue would register against a stop to indicate the drawer was closed all the way. Then releasing the handle would extend the closer tongue, effectively locking the drawer.

I'm also thinking this should be possible with all/mostly wood parts. Also, I need to figure how to make it function without being too awkward so I don't begin to hate having done it.

Any thoughts? Anyone done anything similar?

Thanks,

Craig

>How about something like a door knob with a keeper angled on one side and perhaps spring loaded? You could twist the knob or lift one side of the handle and pull the drawer open and then just push it shut. You could have a set of stops under the drawer that would keep it from comming too far out, but they could be offset so the drawer could come out a little more than half way on each side. When you pushed the drawer shut, it could close against the latch on the far side to keep it from just going straight through and out.

Don't know if you have the tools and skills to do it, but it does not seem impossible. The hard part might be to make it substantial enough to operate over a long period of time and be convient and easy or intuitve to use. Shop drawers can get really heavy

and then there si the "crud factor". I put expensive full extention runners on soem of my shop drawers. Great at first, but they are on a lathe cabinet and I ahve to stop every nowand then and blow them out or debris gets in them and they get sort of "crunchy".

>is my opinion. Workbench drawers get in the way and as mentioned pick up crud. If you are set on them however, here is an idea. Put a partition in the middle of the drawer so that half of the drawer is for one side of the bench and one side is for the other. Then mount a stick on a screw just inside the lip to protrude down. It will prevent the drawer from going in to far because the drawer front will hit it. It will also prevent the drawer from opening beyond the middle partition. If it is mounted on a screw you can swivel it out of the way to remove the drawer. Good luck with your bench.

>Another thought would be to incorporate some ceramic magnets and strike plates (or another magnet) into drawer and slides so that when closed the magnet provides a resistance, but the drawer can be pushed easily to overcome the resistance. I've used something similar for door latches. LV sells the magnetic discs along with washers and cup washers which can be made into useful catches. Or, if the drawer parts are large enough, ball catches used to keep closet doors closed may be a solution.

>Jim, if you mount a stop on the inside of THIS this side that tops the drawer from going "in" too far and stops it from coming out more than half way because the center partition hits it, how would you open this double ended drawer from THAT side?

>place block on the bottom of the drawer cavity. a small 1/4" high or whatever the drawer bottom depth is. make it about 1/2" wide.

screw it from the bottom, outside, for easy removal.

Thanks for the advice...I'll let you know...

>...when it is done. Probably won't be right away, but I think I have the start of an idea that will work. Still some things to work out. I liked Diz's idea of the magnets as they are sure to stay clean, but not nearly Rube Goldberg enough. If I can get this idea polished without it being too obvious (like slapping a dead bolt on) I think I'll have something pretty sharp. Might be useful a number of other places. I better get to sketching it before I lose the thought.

Thanks again,

Craig
