Baby Highchair Plans

Mike Turner

>I am a grandpa looking for a decent set of plans for a baby's high chair.. I have googled and found a couple of plans but am not overly impressed...

I would like something with a removable tray that can be cleaned at the kitchen sink...

Any suggestions regarding where to look... I am not necessarily looking for free plans, just something good that grandpa can make.

I should mention that I don't have a lathe, so turning legs etc. is

not an option..

Thanks in advance..

Mike

>Mike,

You don't need a lathe to turn square stock into round legs or any size dowel you might need. Check out this months issue (Feb 2007) of Woodworker's Journal. They show how to cut round tenons out of square stock using your stack dado head on the table saw. With a little tweaking of the jig they show, bet you could make any length legs you need. Just make sure you go slow and have everything well secured and supported.

No affiliation, yada, yada, yada.

>I'll go waaaay out on a limb here...are you sure a high chair is the project that you want to make? There are many items for babies/infants/todlers where hand made is far superior to factory made (cradles, cribs, youth beds, changing tables, etc.), but for me, at least, a high chair is not one of them.

When my kids were born we were given a wooden high chair. It wasn't hand made, but it could have been. It looked nice, but was not nearly as practical as a factory made metal and plastic high chair. The latter tend to have huge trays to catch messes, fold up, adjust for different heights, etc.

Of course, there is no love in a factory high chair and your needs and reasons may be completely different than mine. You might also find plans that have all the features you desire. I just thought I'd mention it for your consideration.

>Woodsmith issue 57 ( I think) has a set of plans for a high/ youth chair with removable tray. I have built eight and now need to start on #9. No turning involved. They no longer sell back issues, but Klingspor's Woodworking shop in Raleigh NC has some still in stock. Hardware can be bought from Rockler. Woodsmith Store may sell plans too. PM me if I can be of futher assistance.
