Bandsaw blade speed?

Brent

>Hey guys; I've been lurking out here for a while, posting a couple to answer questions I might have some input for, and now I have a question of my own. I'm getting my workshop outfitted bit by bit, and I got a new Craftsman 14" steel frame bandsaw with Christmas money. It came in today, and in the owner's manual, it says that the slower speed (1620 fpm) is for "some plastics, certain nonferrous metals, and hardwoods". The higher speed (3340 fpm) is for "all other timber". Really? I guess I just thought the lower speed was for metal, higher speed for everything else. Input??

>If you run certain plastics through a blade of any kind that is turning too fast for the material, it can melt the material, adhereing it to the blade, this can be a bandsaw blade or a circular blade. This can also cause the blade to cease, plastic scrapnel as pieces of plastic that have melted into a blog come flying out at you, or some other really ugly accidents.

Any saw blade when it is cutting regardless of material will get hot from friction. The faster the blade speed, the higher the friction, and the higher temperature of the blade. A band saw blade can get hot enough to loose its temper, (which usually results in the operator loosing temper also) it will become dull almost instantly.
