Visit from one of my favorite people today//

John Cotten

>I had to run home from an installation I was doing in Danville, KY this morning, forgot my trim router. I was getting ready to leave when up drove one of my favorite people, Carol Reed. We had a great visit, and I of course loaded her up with some great pieces of turning stock and a few pieces of 300 year old walnut, 400 year old poplar, and some white pine that has growth rings of 1/32nd inch. The piece I gave her that probably had 60 or more growth rings in a 2" thickness.

Jennifer Shirly, you have some fun stuff to turn coming to you via Carol.

Well even though it is 6:00PM. I've got to head back to the job site to finish up todays work.

Sorry I haven't been on board for some time, I am alive and well, and struggling like most full time custom woodworkers/cabinetmakers.

God Bless

>Hey Jamie, great to hear from you. I have been slowly, building a custom cabinet and furniture business. I am also making custom millwork, and a few other unusual pieces as ordered.

I have recently taken on a partner, while my shop is still WAY to small (546 sqft) hoping to enlarge in the months to come. Steve and I are working on developing more commerical business heavy on the laminate work. While it may not satisfy me as much as the smell of nirto-lacquer or a great hand rubbed finish, it sure pays better. I am still doing the occassional consulting job, and working on some magazine articles. I hate to say I had not been on my lathe for over a year and a half up until Christmas when a friend asked for a couple of small bowls for presents for her daughters.

My big PM3520 is in Frankfort 30 miles from here at a friends shop on extended loan. My floor space became so critical that the lathe had to leave for awhile until I can build a larger space, or we move the cabinet shop to rented digs. I still have my small Jet mini, but it is even in storage at a friends barn.

Family and I are doing great. My oldest son is 16, going up for his permit next week and working at a local restaurant. He is also working on his Eagle rank, which I am hoping he finishes by spring. My 12 year old got is Star rank two weeks ago and told me yesterday he wants to get his Eagle by age 14. I am still very active in Scouting also. My wife is still working with CDC stuff at the state, which she doesn't talk about too much, and after 19 years of marriage, I don't ask. But she loves her work and is doing great.

Other than that and church, I can be found most days making sawdust somewhere or another. Now, if I can get my customers to pay on time and pray that the checks clear the bank, (mine and theirs lol...)we'll be in great shape.

How are things with you?

>John,

Where in Central KY do you live? I have all kinds of ties to Danville. My whole family went to Centre College. We lived in Danville and Springfield and I worked in Stanford. My Kid is currently visiting her boyfriend's family in Frankfort. We love that part of the world - good people there. Good luck with your business.

>John,

I will say a big loud THANK YOU now!...However, wrenching the turning blanks out of Carol's hands might be another story :)

Carol, if you read this...I'll give you a ring tomorrow (Saturday). Our cellular connection obviously was sporatic yesterday. Maybe then we can fine tune some plans for your visit.

Jen :)
