Need 5" ROS Recommendations

Bart Goldberg

>I have a Dewalt ROS that doesn't seem to spin "random" any more, it just seems to spin and is very hard to work with; it just wants to go in a direction different than where I want it to go. I used to have a PC 333 - and it seemed pretty good. - I have a 6" Ridgid which I like, but is to large for some of the smaller projects I do. Any suggestions for a decent 5"?

Thanks

Bart

>Perhaps if you like your 6" Ridgid you would like the Ridgid 5" as well? I have one and it seems to work well.

>One of the WW magazine ran 5" random orbit test. I cant remember which magazine it was right now but I will look for it when I get home later today. I believe the Bosch 1295 DVS ranked at top but I will give complete update after i find magazine.

>Bart-IIRC, the Dewalt comes with an extra white plastic ring that I think is used to cure the problem you're complaining about. I've never replaced mine, but take a look at the manual for your ROS. Maybe you can fix the tool you have rather than have to buy a new one. (Don't mean to crimp your tool acquisition efforts-buy away if you'd prefer.)

>My DeWalt has a white plastic ring also which is a break. When my ring needed to be replaced (they are supposed to be a consumable) what I experienced was an obvious increase in rotation speed from normal operation. The part was readily available, easy to replace, and inexpensive. Hope this helps.

>I have two Dewalts with the same problem. Anybody know the part number? Is the part available from the "Big Box" or do I have to order it from Dewalt? Thanks

>The foam pad on mine self destructed, so I got a replacement at HomeDepot. It came with the pad and the white ring. I'm not sure but I think I may have seen the white ring available seperately.

Happy Woodworking!

>You can find exploded-view parts diagrams for DEWALT tools and order parts on the ServiceNET web site. Porter-Cable, Delta, EMGLO and Black & Decker products are also listed there now. You do need to create an account for access parts diagrams, manuals, and to order.

I recently ordered new boots for my 15-year-old B&D WorkMate from the ServiceNET site and was satified with the costs and service.
