Tongue Drum *LINK*

David Hay @ Denver

>I recently finished a tongue drum for my son...only a week late for Christmas, but he doesn't seem to mind.

The design comes from a recent WOOD magazine article. I made mine out of some walnut and birch I had laying around the shop. The finish is several coats of shellac and rubbed out with steel wool and wax.

I learned quite a bit about using my jigsaw on this project. When I was almost done cutting the tongues, the entire top split in two as a result of the vibration. Turns out I should have turned off the orbital mode to get a smoother cut. Fortunately, I was able to glue the top back together with no ill effects.

If I were making it again, I think I'd try to avoid having the two largish holes in the top. My 2-year old has already dropped one of his pencils into the drum, which will be a pain to get back out ;)

Thanks for looking!

David

>Nice job! I have that project on my to-do list...for a couple of grandsons. Where were you able to find the balls of the "drum sticks".

>Thanks. I just used a couple of super-balls for the mallets. LOML picked up a whole package at the craft store.

>Interesting! I looked for super-balls in the mall toy store...they didn't have any...I would never have thought of looking in a craft store.
