Sharpening Systems

Larry Hoog

>I have used the Wolverine sharpening system in a class at Woodcraft and found it very useful. I have intended to purchase a sharpening and was set to purchase the Wolverine but saw a system in the Penn State Industries catalog and on their website. It looks identical to the Wolverine but is 1/2 the price.

Has anyone had any experience with either systems? Is the Penn State system like the Wolverine?

Thanks

Garrett's solution is a good one.

>The Wolverine system is good. However it is expensive for a few pieces of metal. Try the archives and you will find other home made versions. Darrell Feltmate posts here often and lists his site. Find one of his postings and go to his site and he shows how to do the same thing with some wood scraps and few eye bolts. I you are in the bucks (which I am not by choice) buy a Wolverine. If you are pinching pennies make one and it will do the same job.

>I will have to look for this wed. There is a site from a guy up north that shows you how to make the whole system out of plywood. It works great I have used it for over a year.

>This may be the information you are referring to about the "guy up north". The one I am referring to died last March, but his information has been posted by a friend. You will have to click on Next at the bottom of the page and then on his lathe tools on the resulting page.

>Larry, I have a home made set up I use based on the Woodcraft slow speed grinder and a two pieces of square steeel tube from the borg. On the right side I have it permanently set for the Ellsworth grind (my favorite go to tool for most everthing.) On the left side I have a TEE bar set up that lets me shapren the skew and any straight tools by sliding the bar in and out to preset marks. There is also a small rest on the left side that stays set for scrapers. I cna litteraly touch up any tool I am using in seconds. The "repeatabily" of the set up avoids wasting metal and grinding tools away. Easy to make and cost about ten or fifteen dollars total. Whatever two pieces of square tube cost. You might be able to use some hardwood for that and avoid the cost altogether. There ae a couple of wing nuts and bolts.

I have a picture I can e-mail you if you like, but I have not whittled it down under 40K to post here. (What a PITA my software is for that). Its at 41k, so I can post it on the Turning side.

You might want to post your question on the Turning Forum aslo.
