Freud glue-line rip blade - differences

Terry Alexander

>Fellow woodworkers,

I am finally going to bite the bullet and get a blade just for ripping. My "research" says that the Freud glue-line is a favorite. So, when I google for this product I get a variety of results.

Can someone/anyone tell me the difference in these Freud product numbers?

LM74R

LM74R010

LM74M

As always...TIA

>Do you want to just rip lumber or rip glue joints? If ripping is the primary goal less teeth is will mean less load on saw and faster ripping with the sacrifice of smoothness of cut.

>I agree with Bill. A 24T blade like a Freud LU87R010 (ATB thin kerf), or an LM72R010 (FTG full kerf), are much more efficient rippers in thick stock. The blades you mentioned are all variations of a triple chip grind 30T blade that's intended to leave a glue ready edge. "Glueline Rip" is a bit of a marketing term. What's often overlooked is that the LM74 is intended to rip only up to ~ 1" thick material...preferable 3/4", which means you'll still want a 24T rip blade for realy thick cuts. Most decent general purpose 40T or 50T blades will leave a glue ready edge too, and will rip to ~ 6/4" and even 8/4", plus will do a good job in a number of other materials and types of cuts.

The LM74 is a nice blade but it has a relatively narrow operating window. As per your question..."R" means it has the red Permashield coating..."M" does not. The "010" or "012" indicate blade diameter.

I agree, the LM72 is a great ripper

>I recently bought one and could not get over the difference in ease of ripping. It's a 24 tooth flat grind. IMO, it leaves a very suitable edge for glueing. In fact, I've read where this blade is considered a glue line rip blade for production shops.
