WC Holiday Weekend Accomplishments....

Dennis E Peacock

>Greetings and Happy New Year to each of you.

This holiday weekend, I spent lots of time with the family and I picked up oncall duty beginning Monday morning at 8AM. I'm about to go to bed for a bit before I pick up oncall once again at 6AM Tuesday morning.

Spent time watching movies with the family, eating junk food, and just generally having a good time with the wife and kids.

I've got lacquer drying in the shop before I can turn the desktops over and start the final spraying of the black lacquer finish. Then it will be bringing the two desktop halves inside the house and let cure for about 2 weeks, then I'll lightly rub out the finish before I deliver it to my customer.

Nothing but work for the day/night job this week.

So how was YOUR holiday weekend?

Best of weeks to you all.

Dennis

>Happy New Year to everyone. Instead of exchanging Christmas gifts this year, my wife and I decided to make reservations at the Sanderling Inn in Duck, NC for the New Years weekend. We had a very relaxing and fun time there again this year.

I just finished refinishing two old rocking chairs and will deliver them shortly. Otherwise, no woodworking for now. We took a picture of this bum we saw out on the beach one morning.

Eat, drink and be merry comes to mind...

>Hi Dennis, and Happy New Year. My holidays were taken up with family, food and friends -- not a bad deal. Before Christmas, I made several picture frames for artwork we were giving to my brother and our daughter. That was about as close as I came to real woodworking, but it was very satisfying.

I hope you all had a great holiday.

>Accomplishments?? Who can accomplish anything with bowl games and parties going on? I did get some spindles roughed out and put to dry. I also sorted through four boxes of tools and stuff from my stepfather's shop. I also unpacked my 2 HP Super Dust Gorilla (stealth gloat). Unfortunately, the "stand" was in the hands of UPS and won't be delivered until later today, so I won't be able to do anything until next weekend.

More Cabinet Work and Some Fun

Mike Fitterling

>Worked on the never-ending maple/walnut kitchen cabinet job. I have been cutting/jointing/planing/gluing-up the slab doors for the 13' long by 10' high wall of cabinets. Doors must have continuous grain running from bottom to top; this pic shows the pains I took in marking everything to make sure things were right. I also resawed some bookmatched veneer to cover the sides of the cabinets where the depth goes from 24" to 16".

I also was able to get in some fun (You have to do something until the glue dries and frees up the clamps). Went out with my f-i-l on his pontoon boat for some night speck fishing (crappie for you Yankees). Caught 29, most of them bass-sized. Had a nice fish fry with Andrea and the kids on New Years Eve.

Send us some, please

Andy Halterman: Equatorial winter weather

>Much rain from those systems here in west NC. I had a healthy flow through my shop on Sunday. Fortunately, it has a slope as it was poured as a garage. I'd have much preferred it to fall as snow.

Road trip to Vegas - Long

Ray Thompson - Middletown,IN

>We decided to go to Las Vegas to visit son and DIL, and, since I refuse to fly, we drove. Three 10 hour days going out in sunshine, losing an hour a day, the time went very nicely. The only hiccup on the way out was an hour at idle getting across Hoover dam. We stayed off the strip and only went down there once to eat at Bobby Flay's on Christmas day. We spent 3 days honking around with the kids and then started the real adventure. We left Vegas early on Thursday morning with the goal of reaching Tucumcari NM that evening. We had some nice flurries in the forrest going around Flagstaff but the road was only wet so we lost little time. After stopping in Albuquerque for dinner we started up the hill on the east side of town and the fun ended. About half way up we ran into flurries that quickly turned into a near whiteout. After traveling about 20 or so miles the State Police shut down the Interstate just barely in front of us and there we sat. Out of the next 8 hours we were able to drive for 8 minutes to another shutdown. We finally reached Tucumcari at 6 a.m. on Friday morning after a 22 hour day. Luckily the motel held our reservation so we were able to get about 3 hours sleep before starting out again. From Tucumcari to Amarillo Tx all of the on ramps heading west were shutdown in anticipation of the big snow expected on Friday. We drove in rain ranging from moderate to frog strangler the entire day until reaching Springfield Mo. late that evening. The last day was almost leisurely by comparison, having only light sprinkles for a few miles before turning nice for the rest of the trip home. Gaining an hour a day on the way back was much more mentally draining than I anticipated. We thought Albuquerque was a nice looking city and wished we had more time to drive through Flagstaff for a closer look. The Interstate goes around Flagstaff through a pine forrest and you get very few sights of the city, but the drive through the trees was very pleasant.

Knobs and things

Stephen Kirk in Quakertown PA

>While not exactly fine furniture, I did need to make myself some star knobs. I say a simple way to make them using some scrap and a few t-nuts. I turned out 5, sprayed on some poly, and now my jigs and fences are useable again. I got tired of never finding star knobs available, or having them cost 2-3 dollars a piece, so, time to start just making them.

I also nearly finished my poker table. I just have to glue in 6 more of the cup holder pieces, then I can do final sanding (and minor mistake fixing) and get some finish on it. I'll be glad to get that shop space back.

Did some cleaning in the shop. It needed the straightening up. Now if I could just figure out what to do with my clamps ...

>I finally got a 16" Walker-Turner bandsaw that I bought a while ago up and running. It's the first piece of machinery in my shop that I can say is in operational condition.

As can be seen, it's on a homemade stand built by the guy I bought this from. On the back side of the stand is a less than ideal motor setup - the belt is completely exposed. I plan on making a new stand to address this issue and to try to improve dust collection, such as it is, on this bandsaw.

Lots-O-Miles

Mac in Indy

>Friday was spent soaking up the 82* blue sky weather on the beach on Siesta Key in Florida. Built a sand castle and swam with the kids.

Saturday we spent 16.5 hours driving home to Indiana. 1000 miles.

Sunday we undecorated the house and cleaned up after Church.

Monday I had most of the day in the shop. I chose to do some major cleaning and reorganizing as the fringes of the shop had become cluttered with stacks of stuff. I got a lot done but there is still a lot to do before I get back to my router bcabinet project. I hung a few things on the wall in the shop and in the daughters room which let me try out the stud finder and laser level I picked up at Lowes with a gift card some friends gave me. Neat little gizmos!

I had two days off work and...

Gary Camp - Bend, Oregon

>For the first time in "I can't remember how many years" I didn't need to be at work on New Years Eve. I actually got to see my house and yard in the day light, the first time in a couple of weeks. Generally no days off during the Christmas Break when you work the recreation industry. We had company and cooked lots of good food. I did a little clean up round the shop and yard. I did get a chance to finally get some book shelves up and I got to re-shelve my Woodworking books.

David Hay @ Denver

>Not much woodworking this weekend. I spent a little time yesterday rubbing out the finish on a tongue drum I made for my son. It seems to be a big hit (pun definitely intended) and only a week late...not too shabby. Of course, he promptly put a short pen down one of the top holes that I'll have to spend some time fishing out at some point...

Know what you mean abut the star knobs.

Don Henthorn

>I always like the wooden ones I made better than any factory made knob. the wood just feels better and gives a better grip on my opinion.

Did you mean 'claro' walnut? I have never heard of 'clarion' walnut; is it an alternate name for the same west coast species?
