OT - Swedish Plane

>I have a question on a Swedish plane, not the one commonly discussed here or even on the quiet side of WC.
My son, an airplane freak, received a JAS 39A Gripen model plane as a Christmas gift. He and I have a disagreement as how to pronounce "Gripen."
Is the "i" pronounced as in "mine," or as in "tip"?
We know English-wise, the "i" should be as in "mine." But this is Swedish, not English.

Gripen translates to The Gryphon which is the mythological creature in the middle of SAAB's logo. The link below has a lot more about the plane including some nice promotional video footage.
