Upholstery Staplers

Kevin Rabenaldt

>Suggestions needed on a type of air operated upholstery stapler. I have found basically two types, 22 ga 3/8 crown fine wire and 20 ga 1/2 crown fine wire. I will be stapling fabric to seat custions and headboards. In the past I have used the hand powered one (what a pain) into plywood. Seems to me that the 22 ga is kind on thin as the 20 ga is listed as a flat staple. But I am not sure of anything.

Rainco seems like a good one. Anyone have suggestions as to types and brands.

>A friend of mine owns an uphostery company in Houston. The guys all used to prefer BeA brand staplers 10 years ago when I handled shipping for six months. 20 gauge and they had different lengths depending on what they were doing but 3/8 was the most common. I have the Porter Cable that uses the 22 gauge and I have never thought I needed a larger staple. I have used it for screen wire far more than for uphostery, so take my opinion on it with a grain of salt.

>I don't know about specialty pro brands, but my local upholstery guy (and I'm sure there are others in town—I just don't know about them) uses the Porter-Cable US58 (same as Norm uses, if you want another endorsement), and he says it'll fire those 38" C staples all day long. I bought one for my daughter about five years ago, and she's used it a fair amount (craft type upholstery stuff) and I haven't heard any complaints.

I bought a Senco SFW-08C a year or so ago and it did a fine job stapling insulation this fall as I walled in the shop. I'm about to do some minor upholstery and valance work with it, too, and expect no problems. I have an entire suite of Senco pneumatics (five—yes, that's right, 5), which is why I went in a different direction than my daughter.

>I have the Senco - think it is the 3/8 22 gage. I have used it for stapling insulation on old studs, some vinyl for one seat and fabric on a sewing chair. I bought it used on ebay a year or so ago. It has worked perfectly for everywhere I have used it. Only issue I had was finding staples. I went to several stores (all the borgs), finally found the staples at a local Do-it center in a 50,000 quantity box. The staples cost me more than the stapler, but I have a life time supply!

>I bought a Porter Cable US58 on Amazon for $39 last year. They're normally $79 but I found it marked way down for a day or two. great little stapler. It uses 22-ga, 3/8" crown staples up to 5/8" long. I've used mine to redo some seat tops covered in vinyl. We just completed the re-upholstery of an old antique rocker with it. Fires just fine through multiple layers of fabric, jute and foam. great little stapler.

I too had a hard time finding staples and didn't want to buy more that a lifetime supply, but then I found this place on ebay that sold them in smaller quantity assortments. You pick and choose which size combination you want. The link to that supplier is below.

>Well, I decided and ordered today from a company called floyd tool. Hope they are good to deal with as I have had no experience with them. They had a very good website and explained things well about their tools. I decided on a Fastco 20 gauage 1/2 inch crown. This will give the flexibility to staple insulation, felt, canvas, vinyl. It is overkill for just batting and fabric but the staples will be hidden on the back side.

Thanks, for everyone's input. I also bought the 22 gauage 3/8" crown one from Porter Cable.

Thanks, Kevin

Staples

Rod Peterson -- Ormond Beach

>Contact me for some staples that may fit your new gun. My old Bostich T-31 ½" crown stapler died some time back (unfixable), and I have some boxes of staples in a couple of sizes that I have no other use for. Yours for shipping, if they'll fit.

>Rod, thanks for the offer. I have searched the internet for that stapler. I can not find hardly a reference to it. I suspect it quite old and been out of circulation awhile. Bostich website does not have it listed as one produced after 1990. For products listed before 1990 you have to contact customer service.

The tool I ordered is listed to take the following staples

for the following tools Duo-fast 5000, Bea 95, JK-64, Haubold 900.

It is a 20 gauge staple from 1/4 to 5/8 inched in length with 1/2" crown.

If you think it may fit, lets talk. I did order 5000 of 1/4, 5/16,3/8, and 1/2.

thanks, Kevin
