Is my shellac still good?

Derek

>I posted this on the hand-tool side but am hoping for some quick advice.

I have some SealCoat which was made ohn 10/22/03. It says it is good for 3 years from that date. I put a few drops on a piece of glass to see if it is good. It seems to have dried OK but may not be hard enough. I brought it into the house to dry since it is not very warm in the garage.

Can anyone give me an idea how long I should wait for this test? How hard should I expect it to be? I can not smell alcohol anymore and neither can my wife.

I use shellac occasionally but am not an expert.

Oh - this is for a workbench (not so durable but easy to repair) and I'd like to apply it today if possible. I don't know if I can buy any more today, so that is why I'd like to use it if possible.

>Derek,

Press your fingernail into the spot and see if it leaves a mark. Take some fine sandpaper, 320 or 400, and lightly sand the test patch. If no or very slight mark and good dust and no balling, the stuff should be OK. See my post above about using shellac under waterborne finishes, however. If you were going that route, I'd suggest you get/make some fresh product.

>I think the shellac has past it's useful life. I'm going to toss it. It stays rubbery.
