question regarding rechargeable batteries

Marni Schmidt

>Slightly off topic...my cordless phone's rechargeable batteries have died (no longer taking a charge) and their specs are AAA NiMH 1.2v 600 mAh. I have found AAA 850 mAh as possible replacements - would this work? (higher mah)or do I need to stick with exact same specs as original? (V-tech model ip 5825) Thanks for your expertise and HAPPY 2007!

>Marni,

mAh (milli-Amp-hours) is the amount of power available. The more, the better. What you have to match are the voltage(1.2 V) and chemistry (NiMH). If the 800 mAh batteries are identical to the voltage and chemistry of the phone, you'll be fine.

>They should be fine as long as they fit physically the increased mah will just give you a longer talk time. They will also take longer to recharge.

As others have said the new pack if it physically fits should work the phone with no problem. However there is a concern with the battery charger built into the phone. The pack becomes part of the charger when it is plugged in and therefore you are re designing it so to speak.

The resistance of the pack would be the factor and in this case probably not a problem, but I would not trust it until I had tested for a while.

The problem indicator will be if the pack gets excessively HOT. Put it on charge and carefully touch it (feeling for heat) after about 15 mins then again in 30 mins and keep doing that for at least a couple of hours.

Absolutely do not make this change and then leave it unattended or go to bed.
