Pocket hole screws

>I'm now about to order the Kregg pocket hole jig and screws. I have a few cabinets to build and will be using 2" wide rail and stiles for the face frames. What would you consider to be a good length of screw to purchase? Its hard to guess this with out using the jig before, i'm not sure how far the set back is from the end grain when you use the jig)does that make sense?).

Many thanks

Lee

>If you're using 3/4" material, use 1-1/4" screws. Be sure your corners are squared up and the material is held tight to your bench before driving the screws. Use glue as well as screws. Also, be sure the rails are vertical and square to the drilling jig before drilling. I've had mine for 3-4 yrs. and my technique has improved with practice. Good luck. Hal

>Yep. The 1 1/4" is the way to go. Make sure that you use the correct thread configuration. Fine threads for hardwood. Coarse threads for soft wood.

Love my Kreg.

>Lee,

If I understand your question regarding setback, that is taken care of automatically with the jig itself. If I remember right, I think the instructions recommend using a nickel to set the drill stop on the drill bit. Only had to do it once 5 or so years ago and it has never needed changing. You'll really like the Kreg tool. McFeelys has a good selection of screws and I think Lee Valley does as well.

Lee, One little caution......

>I like my Kreg Jig a lot. But remember, those screwes are hardened. I have been known to forget where they are and drill into them. The are hard on a drill bit. If you hit one with a saw blade, router bit, or jointer....kiss that cutter goodbye. I drilled into one yesterday and had to sharpen the bit.

>Lee I got my last box of pocket screws from CSH hardware, they are an advertiser here, and really like them and I think they may be a little cheaper. Might be worth a look. Larry in Ohio

Pocket hole screws, I use them for everything!

>Lee, consider getting 1", 1.25", 1.5" and 2.5" screws. I am forever finding uses and appreciate having a box of screws around. I just built a chase around my fireplace with 2x4. Used 2.5" course without any predrilling. These screws are excellent. A few years back, when finishing basement ceiling, I built an enclosure around the ductwork. Used 1" course screws into 3/4" pine. I could make infinite fine adjustments to any piece and when done, hang from the setup. That 200 lbs. deadweight. You will use those screws for so many things, once you have plenty around. Excellent tool, excellent screws. Tom

>Rockler carries the screws and plugs for your holes. If you want to hide your pocket screw holes, following the screw insertion, just dab some glue into the hole and place the filler piece (plug) into the hole. Hit the part sticking out, after the glue has dried, with your chisel and/or sander and it will be even harder to avoid hitting the screw with your saw because you will hardly be able to find the hole site.
