Happy Birthday Dad

Jim Shaver Oakville, Ont.

>Happy Birthday Dad,

Today would be my Dad's 80th birthday. My Grandmother used to tell me my father was the only man on earth who could be born on the darkest day of the year (the winter solstice) and make it so bright. This is my dad when he was about 8-9 months old.

He's been gone now 9 years, but I never forget him or his birthday, Grade school Christmas plays on his birthday he always said were my Christmas gift to him. I always treasure the great one on one times we shared as well, how they come back to me now, I was blessed to have him as my dad.

Christmas and the Holidays for some is not always so bright a time. Sometimes the loss of some one is hard yet to accept. I would like to share and wish for you that remembering the ones you love and miss at this time of year is a way of peaceful healing in your heart and one that should always be cherished. It's part of celebrating them and keeping them alive in your memory, I miss my dad.

Take care,

Jim

>That is a very touching tribute Jim. I miss my parents but I sometimes feel that I miss my two brothers and two sisters who have joined them more.

My oldest brother died as a result of the medication given to fight malaria that he contracted during WWII. He died in `64. I lost the second brother in `87 two years before my dad died in 89. This was followed by my mom in `94, and first sister in `97 to pneumonia, second one in 2000 to cancer.

You are correct in that this season has some difficult moments. But today is also the 2nd birthday of my youngest granddaughter, so she shares something with your dad.

>Good Evening Jim,

I especially remember my own Dad who passed away at this time of year 55 years ago when I was still in grade school. That was a long time ago, but I still can fully share your feelings.

>Jim,

I spent most of today at work sitting in front of a computer screen but I was playing Choral music through it's CD. I was reminded of the gift my parents were/are. My mother left this world much too early from the perspective of us humans. She instilled in her five children a deep appreciation of beauty-which sense that beauty was displayed didn't matter- She was an excellent singer, cook and decorator- Modern day terms for what she grew-up simply calling- A Homemaker. Dad also has a fine singing voice but his legacy is a work ethic and an inventive spirit. When we were children Christmas was always held at My grandparents house-Now my brother's place. Every year the children were lined up for a photo in the stair way. A year ago we were all together and had this digital shot taken. I am framing this and sending it to my siblings and my Dad for Christmas. and I'm keeping one for myself!

Thanks for your thoughtful post. Enjoy the memories of your Dad.

Alan

>Jim,

Thanks for reminding us of what's really important in our lives. I lost my Dad in '97, and my oldest son in '03. I miss them both terribly, but they are here with me in my memories, and that is a comfort, even as I type through the tears. Thanks again, my friend.

God Bless,

Brad Chenoweth

>Jim,

I never know when I'll have one of those memory moments about Dad. Some hymns in church bring them on. My second's b-day is shared with Dad, so that always triggers them. Moments like reading this post. The ones that really get me though are the times I need a problem solving idea, or a second opion, and I instinctively reach for the phone before I remember he's not there.

Thanks,

Mike

I hear ya Jim. I feel the same way about my Dad. His 76th birthday would have been on December 27th. Rather than the same old B-day gifts he used to get, I would always make him up a basket of foods he loved. Fresh cheese, wine, fresh bread, olives, roasted peppers, and some spicy pepperoni. Rather than eat it himself, he'd always end up sharing these with everyone.

Thanks for sharing this.

Dominic

>Jim, I don't think that you will ever forget your Dad's Birthday. I know that I haven't and he has been gone 26 years now. I also remember the day that I got the call that he had died. December 19,1980. For the longest time something would come to my mind and I would say to myself " I will talk to Dad about this." It still happens once in awhile even after all of these years.

>My father also passed away on a cold day in early February at the VA hospital in Chicago - 55 years ago. I was 10 years old. It was a great loss to me but in a way I was lucky to have spent so much time with him. I was born when he was 58, my mother was 40. So my father had retired and was home for a few years when I was growing. I have many fond memories and still think of him often.
