Sterling chest corner splitting

I made my daughter a fine chest out of Maple to hold her Sterling silver. The lid has a frame of 3/4 x 1/2 inch Maple and the corners meet at a 45 degree angle. Problem is the wood must have had moisture in it and two of the frame pieces have shrunk back at the corners leaving a gap of a 32nd of an inch. It is not possible to get them back together by reclamping and gluing because the frame has not pulled away from the main portion of the lid.

The panel needs to float...

What happened is probably that the piece that is framed grew across the grain as wood is proned to do. Wood moves far more across the grain than along the grain and it's this difference that's openned the miters.

There is really no fix for this, you need to set the panel in the frame in such a way that it can grow and shrink without being restricted by trhe frame.
