Here's what I was told.

Mullion-bars vertical or horizontal that separate panes in a window

Muntons-are usually larger and separate or tie together two or more windows

Gary has it pretty much right. "Mull" is a a term for joining two windows, and a "Mullion" is the joining member. A "Muntin" can be a dividing member between panes of a window or panels in a paneled wall.

John and Tommy, thanks for your alternative explanation. If this is true, Tommy should be able to grow Mt. Level into an Alp by starting with a flock of sheep.
