Make a Pair of Wooden L-Shaped Bookends

This isn't a contest like the old days. There are no complicated rules, no elaborate plans, and no need to spend money on special materials.

The challenge is simple: make a pair of handmade wooden L-shaped bookends using scraps and things you already have. Ideally, the project should take less than an hour.

Your bookends can be simple or elaborate. Use whatever wood, tools, joinery, and finish you have on hand.

The Rules

  1. Make a pair of wooden L-shaped bookends.

  2. Use scrap or leftover material whenever possible.

  3. Keep it simple—the idea is a project that can reasonably be completed in about an hour.

  4. Take a photo of your finished bookends and post it here.

  5. Tell us a little about your project:

    • Choice of wood

    • Dimensions

    • Cuts and construction

    • Fastening or joinery

    • Sanding

    • Finish

    • Anything else interesting about how you made them

And Then We All Pick a Winner

There is only one criterion:

The bookends with the most 👍 thumbs-up likes win.

So don't worry about whether your bookends are fancy, perfectly symmetrical, or made from expensive wood. A pair made from construction scraps is just as welcome as one made from figured walnut.

The point is to make something, show it off, and see what everyone else comes up with.

Ready? Dig through the scrap bin and get building!

Make One. Give One.

There's another possibility with this project that we'd love to see.

Bookends are small, useful, and easy to make in multiples. If you enjoy making them, consider making an extra pair—or several—and donating them to a local school, library, charity, church, veterans' organization, thrift shop, or someone in your community who could use them.

If you do donate your bookends, tell us about it when you post your project. We'd especially like to hear who received them and why you chose them.

A simple project made from a couple of pieces of scrap wood can end up being something that somebody else enjoys for years.

Make a pair. Show us what you made. And, if you can, make somebody else's day with a pair, too.

Hmmm...the response to this isn't exactly overwhelming. :)
