I am building a large table (4'x8'). The table top is approx 1 1/2" thick Walnut and I would like to use an Ogee Edge. In my opinion, the standard Ogee Edge router bits are too small for a 4' x 8' x 1 1/2" table top edge. I found a Whiteside larger Ogee but it is 2 1/2" outer bit diameter. I could not use that in my hand router but would have to use my routing table. Handling a heavy 4 x 8 table top on a routing table doesn't seem feasible to me. I thought about making a custom poly base for my Bosch 1617 router with a larger base hole for this larger bit but that doesn't seem safe. I have heard of two pass (upper and lower) routing but I would not know how that would be done. Any thoughts or recommendations?

#2I agree. this is not a project for a router table. If the bit you're considering uses a bearing to guide the bit, buy a sized set of router bit bearings that are compatible with your Whiteside bit. Start with the largest bearing and work your way down to the size ogee you desire on subsequent passes. As an alternative, gradually lower the bit as you make several passes until you reach your desired profile. The point is to avoid taking a large bite while hand routing.

#3Thanks for the reply. After a lot of thought, I decided to buy 1/4" thick plexiglass and make a custom base. The large bit has a 1/2" shank and my Bosch 1617 can handle a 1/2" bit. I will make several subsequent passes with the large bit at a slow router speed.
