Sapodilla box

Here is a box turned from a chunk of sapodilla that Chris Ramsey gave me.  Sapodilla is a very large tree that grows in Mexico.  It is known for its durability and insect resistance.  It is very fine grained, dense and quite hard but it turns well. I was most concerned about heat buildup  for fear it would check as the Wood Database suggests.

2 3/4" tall and 3 1/2" wide

Re: Sapodilla box

Michael -- I love seeing your boxes. You nailed the form with this one. That, combined with the beautiful wood, makes this a very special box.

I've said it before, for several years I kept a 2x-sized picture of one of your boxes on the wall next to my lathe. I found it inspirational -- reminding me to slow down and get the form 'right' before moving on. The picture only came down because it was lost when I remodeled my shop a couple of years ago and the picture was misplaced (as were a ton of other things). This box is a candidate for the next pin-up!

another Stafford classic

Great form, as always.  Nice to learn about that wood -- new to me.

How does the lid fit on?  It's not clear from the photos.

Snug suction fit. It is a little tighter than I wanted but I was afraid to keep nibbling on the body tenon for a perfect fit.
