I have been working on a segmented cremains urn for a friend of mine. The urn is for her mothers cremains. Turners say to use a cubic inch of rice per pound of body weight. This is pretty easy if you are making a square or rectangle urn. It gets harder if you are turning one. I know how to figure square inches of a circle. Then multiply by the depth and you have cubic inches. I'm doing a vase shape with lots of inside curves and tapered sides. I made a box that is one cubic inch inside measurement. I weighed this box on my postal scale. I then filled the box with rice and weighed that. A cubic inch of rice weighs .4 ounces. To be on the safe side, I used .5 ounces for a body weight of 145 pounds before she passed. I hope that this long winded post helps others who are doing urns.

Joe, very interesting, I remember someone on this site had a handy dandy chart showing weight of deceased with volume of space required

Thats handy, but how about the math,

I was trying to remember how to calculate the volume of a sphere, or ovoid.

Seems like 4/3 x pi x r3 ? Or for the egg, which would have 3 different radii, just plug each of them into that last part. Is this correct?

Most of our hollow form internal shapes are probably closer to being a truncated cone.


The formula for a truncated cone is.... Volume= ⅓ π (r12 + r1r2 + r22) H (The second number in each element is a 2 indicating that the radius is squared.) But it is easier to just go to a website and plug in the radii of your estimated truncated cone. See the attached link. http://keisan.casio.com/has10/SpecExec.cgi?id=system/2006/1223372110

I have used this method successfully many times. Once the volume is known it is just a matter of obtaining the correct amount of rice. This is done by converting cubic inches to the equivalent volume in a liquid measuring cup. This link does that for you.

As others have said a good guesstimate of one cubic inch per pound will usually do just fine as long as the internal volume of the hollowed out area is sufficient.

I went the other way, by determining how much a cubic inch of rice would weigh. I then multiplied the body weight of the deceased to get my final volume. since I am building a segmented form, I could add layers or rings to get to the final volume. I did not care to get into complicated math to determine the volume.

I agree with the truncated cone formula listed in this thread. The one cubic inch per pound of body weight is a formula put out by a funeral home association, of sorts. I'm sorry but I don't remember the actual name of the association but it is a guideline they use. I have turned a lot of urns and find it to be a little overkill and have always found there was a lot of room left over, but it is as good a guideline as i can find. I guess it is better to be a little too big than too small.
