>I love treadle lathes. I am definitely going to build on before too long. My spring pole lathe is fun to demonstrate but kids have trouble understanding how to pull the tool back on the back stroke. I think they would have a ball on the treadly lathe.

>Wow, Carole,
That's a beauty, but it seems a little fussy -- I think a simpler design would be more tempting !

>The Woodwright's Shop did one a few years back and there was a companion article that expanded on it a bit in Popular Woodworking. Might be a good source for your design.
Looked relatively easy and, if you're willing to use power tools, even easier. (I definitely would be.) It is something in my long list of future projects.

>Hi Carole, thanks for posting the reference site. As Brad knows, in New England where old is measured in centuries and decades not years and weeks, commercial treadle lathes that were used for both wood and metal turning can still be found.
As an :) OT aside: webtv said SMC was temporarily too busy so I searched. Found over a half million SMC sites, including Save the Manatee Club and the Scottish Mountaineering Club. Interesting, but no cigar!
Thanks again. I would have never found this interesting site.
