Innovative Perspectives Exhibit

Keith Tompkins

>A new exhibition opens this Sunday: Innovative Perspectives in Turning. It will open at the Lynn T. Bignall Gallery in Brookfield,CT, and then move to the Wood Turning Center in Philly.

The curator for this event is Albert LeCoff, founder of the Wood Turning Center. About twenty nationally recognized turners were invited to participate; considered by Mr LeCoff to be the most innovative American turners.

I will have two pieces in the exhibit.....I have mentioned this exhibit to a couple of WC regulars who have encouraged me to post about the event. This exhibit is a huge boost to my turning career, and I hope it doesn't appear to be too much of a "gloat". I hesitated to post this; as I want to avoid the appearance of bragging. I certainly hope it doesn't come across that way. But, I am thrilled to say the least.

I'll preview the exhibit tomorrow....

I live in the middle of Amish farmlands in south-central PA. I started turning in 1989 on a Craftsman monotube and learned from a book in our local library. After turning for a few years, I finally saw another person use the lathe! Then I attended the national symposium in RI (2004?) and that was my downfall.......new tools! bigger lathe! Since I had to support myself, I needed to do production turning, working with contractors, antique dealers and furniture repairmen. In 2005 I got an order for 12 bottle stoppers, I had never turned one, bought the only ones available, did not like them (chrome), put one on my son's metal lathe, shaped it to my liking, took it to a local machine shop and asked "can you make this out of stainless steel?".............. the rest is history! Check out my ss stoppers on my website: www.torne-lignum.com

>Keith,

Thanks for the dates. I tried to Google the Bignall Gallery to no avail. I Googled the Philly Wood Turning Center, and they haven't posted the show yet. I sent them an email asking for the information and suggesting that they post it.

I hope the dates work out for me -- I'd really like to see it.

Hello Everybody! I figure I've been hanging around WoodCentral for a few years now so I might as well officially post a Bio. I'm Jennifer and I reside in the heart of the Midwest in Indianapolis. You'll usually find me hanging out on the turning side of WoodCentral, but I check the Main forum too. I started woodworking about 25 years ago mostly interested in flatwork; small furniture and other items to use around the home. Then I discovered the lathe and became obsessed with it. I've been turning for about 23 years now. My love and excitement for turning has taken me into the world of teaching and frequent demonstrating. Lots of experimenting with textures, color, burning over the past several years. I've recently begun dabbling in metal clay work and have started incorporating it in to my turnings too. It's another toolbox full of toys! When I'm not turning, I'm hanging out with the love of my life and most honest critic, my husband Clay. In order to keep the lathe spinning and the lights on I spend the other part of my day at an ABC television station directing the evening newscasts.
