>This is designed to depict the Algonquin and Iroquois legend explaining the constellation Ursa Major. The bowl of the big dipper is the Bear, and the three stars of the handle are the three warriors/hunters that pursue him. This piece stands 5 1/2" tall, and is 4" diameter, finished with Danish oil, and will be buffed when completely dry. Thanks to Marshall Gorrow for leading me to the legend.
The Board is having photo problems. I have e-mailed the webmaster to see if they can get it fixed. I had the same problem, and you can see others below also.
I think it may be that you can't use Preview before Posting. Either that, or the size limit was reduced back below 40kB.
I want to see your Bear! Please try the photo again.
>Molly, this is a great work. I was going to ask if it was going to KC with you but after reading Mike S. post, I guess it's a present for his bride! The legend was quite interesting, too. Marshall is not only a good turner and a nice guy, he's also very informed!
>Molly, I love this signature form you're creating. It works so well as a canvas for your burnings. The way you frame the "characters" on these piece's is so unique. I love the fact that this one depicts an actual legend. It really gives it that extra touch that makes it so special.
I can't wait for Kansas to see your work in person!
This is real nice -- as a turner who also teaches Astronomy (no "L") and telescope making, it really works for me !
There are many great books to go further with this theme -- one that occurs to me is "Beyond the Blue Horizon" which is a pretty cool book about all sorts of mythological things related to the sky, and has all sorts of neat Native American and other paleolastronomy references. Feel free to contact me for others, if you wish...
