Result of Opinion Poll on Bottle Stoppers!

Ruth Niles

>Hi,

After the great response to my opinion poll here, I had a sample stopper made up. It's a better grade of stainless steel, FDA approved rubber rings which are easier to keep clean than the big rubber stopper (suggestion from WC member in email, thanks), the tenon is 3/8" same size as woodworm for reverse chucking (another suggestion from WC member, thanks) and the bottom is rounded for smoother, softer look. This last is the result of someone here asking why the chrome plated were pointed, which there is no reason for other than "that's the way we do it"!

Thanks everyone for your input.

Ruth

now, do you have to go to china for production?

Ruth Niles

>Hi Stuart,

Since I'm having the initial run made here in the states, I sort of think the cost will be prohibitive to being able to offer them through a catalog so I'll be selling them myself for now. Once I get a million (slight exaggeration!!) orders, I might be able to order in larger quantities and get a better mfg. price.

>Boy, e, I'm going to try to stay in the states for production. Sure the stoppers would be less from China, but between the quantity required, shipping, customs and a person for quality control (don't want to get 5,000 wrong!), I'd rather live with a meager profit and deal eye-to-eye with someone here.

>Really great Ruth. I like it much better than the other ones I have seen. Stoppers are big on my list of things I want to make since there are a ton of wine boutiques in the area and there is a winery about thirty miles away. Let me know when they go for sale and for how much.

p.s. On top of being Air Force, I'm a business student majoring in finance and marketing. If you think I may be able to help with anything on this don't hesitate to let me know (I'm anxious to test out my new knowledge).

Pardon my Really Stupid Question. Please

Barry Irby

>Ruth, Having exactly zero stoppers, I have a really stupid question. Does it fit and seal well? It just looks like too steep an angle to my engineering brain. I really like them and would like to buy some once you get them going, but I was wondering about the fit to the bottle.

Re: Pardon my Really Stupid Question. Please

Ruth Niles

>Barry, that certainly is not a stupid question. Yes, it fits very snug on the middle ring for an average wine bottle. The taper is perfect so the stopper will accomodate a variety of openings. I took a wine bottle to the shop, when they made samples, we tested them in the bottle. I'll email you with the price info.

Paul in Phoenix, AZ

>Ruth, this is a real clean look. The proportions are right. I was never much interested in turning bottle stoppers because I didn't like the cork or big chrome plated pieces. I just might have to turn a few if you start selling the stopper kits.

>Ruth, how did you adhere the top?

I really like the stopper base!!! Pending a 'trial run' with one, I'd be willing to look at an order of 100. Please email me with the price and details when you have them.

Any etsimated date for completion?

Jack (in the heat...finally!)

Re: kits...........

Ruth Niles

>Paul, thanks for the interest. I won't be selling kits, even though I'm not quite sure what you mean by "kits". You'd use a woodworm or make wood dowel chucks to reverse the woodturning just to finish off the top. If I'm not making myself clear, feel free to email me and I'll send you process pictures of how I turn these.

>Hi Jack,

I use TiteBond II for all my stoppers; actually it's the only glue I use.

I'll email you with the pricing and availability.

Thanks,

Re: Albany in Oct.........

Ruth Niles

>Hi Bill,

I'm going to try real hard to be at Albany again this year. Totally Turning is an excellent symposium. If the interest continues here and on other forums like it has been, I might be sharing a booth with Gary Evans and his wife. He will be selling wood and possibly having another Swap Meet for the turning public. I'll have a LOT of these little beauties there!

Re: Pardon my Really Stupid Question. Please

>Thanks Ruth, Please do E-mail me when you are ready to ship, I'm a pack rat at heart and am saving all kinds of little off cuts and bits of wood that will make excellent stoppers. Actually I'm saving them because of the pack rat gene and hoping to find a use for them and stoppers would be a good one. Maybe I will make earrings from the off cuts from the stoppers.

>There is no end to our use of cut-offs. To go a couple steps farther, you can use the cut-offs from pens and earrings to make little 1/4" tall goblets, and the cut-offs from the goblets to make little lemons to put in them.

Excellent incorporation of features!

Dominic Greco at home in Richboro, PA

>Ruth,

These look great! I especially like the fact that you used the woodworm screw as the basis for the "dowel" size. That is a selling point all on it's own.

To be truthful, I could never understand the point on the end of the chrome stoppers. Is it so hard to find the opening of a bottle that you need some kind of "guide" to do so> :>)

Please be sure to post when you have enough of these to start filling orders. As many have already stated, I'd like to try out some as well.

See ya around

Dominic
