Sorry I've been out of touch for few days. I will try to dig up a photo of my free standing salad bowl. I either put it on some disc or tossed it accidentally because it isn't in my computer. It may not be what your after. I basically made a sort of stool with 3 legs that the salad bowl would sit on.

>Thanks John but what I'm looking for is a way to join three legs in the middle. I have a friends tripod to use as a model and it uses a Y shaped bolt with each of the legsof the Y threaded for a cap nut. It works great but nobody's ever seen or heard of this kind of bolt. I'm thinking of threading them together with rawhide but a bolt would make a much more stable tripod.

>I've seen some hand carved, overseas, out of a single piece of wood, which when opened, formed the tripod you are looking for. Trying to reproduce the design, much less the method, from memory, however, is out of the question. Sorry. You might want to go browse a Pier 1, or equivalent importer, of this kind of stuff. My guess is that they probably come from India.

>A fellow turner made a nice bowl and submitted it to a gallery for consideration. He was turned down. Many months later, he purchased a bunch of bamboo sticks from Pier 1. They were about 18" long, burnt for effect, and some symbols carved into them. I think he paid .50 each for them. He made a tripod using epoxy putty at the join...big blob of it. Covered the join with rawhide lacing. Submitted the SAME bowl (now in the tripod) to the SAME gallery and was accepted.
