Help with dye please

Bud Gabaree

>I'm going to try to accent a bowl with a dyed rim and would like to know what the preferred finishing method is.

I've seen many beautiful vessels here that feature a dyed portion, but its difficult to tell from pictures how the pieces are finished (or I can't remember the description).

Is it wise to oil and buff a piece with dye on it? Is lacquer a better choice?

Thanks for the help, Bud

>Hi Bud,

In my very limited dying experience, I've done this:

1) turn and dye the piece as desired

2) lightly resand the dyed portion to get rid of any "raised" fibers

3) use my favorite "Tried and True" varnish to coat the entire piece

4) Buff with the Beall system

Note that even with the varnish, my buffing wheels have picked up some of the color from past dyed pieces. Note also that I have not seen an of this color on the wheels bleed into any subsequent pieces.

Good luck!

Mike

use mostly Analine dye and just about any finish will work over it. Finish changes the color of dye, sometimes dramatically so test the color first.

>Bud I have good luck using lacquer over dyes - but be careful to note the carrier used for the dye. Alcohol based dyes can be reactivated by some lacquers, so I use water based lacquer over them. Water based dyes seem to hold up well for me over water based finishes as well, too, I like water based finishes in general because they are absolutely clear and do not impart a yellow appearance - Deft does - just try it over white paint one time. As noted above - test first.

I believe Andi Wolfe uses watco oils over her colored work, it gives a very rich looking result, her work is as good as it gets. I have not done this.

>Thanks guys, I was hoping that Watco would be okay. That's my finish of choice and if it works for Andi it'll work for me.

Thanks again, Bud
